AR10T and J4 Bullets

Hi,

Went out shooting the AR10T yesterday and decided to use a box of Winchester supreme competition that I had. I'll be reloading for this rifle but wanted a little weekend therapy and didnt have time to load some stuff up. In any case, this factory ammo uses Nosler's J4 jacketed 168 grainer. On 2 or 3 rounds, I had jams as the nose appeared to impact something and fold up a little. In one case, the bullet was actually smashed back into the case by quite a bit. Glad I didnt touch of that round. I can't decide if this is a rifle problem, neck tension on the bullet or the jacket. I know that J4 jackets are thinner than say, the Sierra jacket. Too bad as the ones that went down range shot very well. I may try the plastic tipped AMAX bullets to see if I can overcome this problem. Any feedback would be appreciated.

You may have burrs on your feed ramps. I had a similar problem with bullets being gouged and even being pushed back into the case. Turns out the feed ramps on my AR15 had some burrs on them. However, this only happened with soft point bullets. Specifically WCC 64gr PP and R-P 55 PSP bullets. Anyway, I took out my Dremel and used it to polish the ramps, ever so gently and shot several hundred rounds to clean things up. Seems to have worked. YMMV, HTH.

I'll look into that. I did try one thing this afternoon. I loaded up some Polymer tipped AMAX 155 bullets and cycled through about 5 rounds to see if the problem was there with this bullet. All rounds fed fine with no signs of an attempt by the feedramp to stop them. I'll try a few Sierras next but I sure hope this rifle likes the AMAX bullet as it shoots very well in my bolt actions. Sure with the AR type rifle were not so darn hard on brass. Darn things look like they went through a war. Thanks.

If you think that AR10 is hard on brass, try an HK91! First it's fluted, then it's booted!
