2009 Best Handgun.

Yes, it's me with the same poll I posted last year for the 2008 Best Handgun. This year again you have a chance to vote for, and discuss, the handgun that you have found to be the best in 2009. You outline your own reason(s) for voting for any particular gun.

Here is the summary of results from the 2008 poll:

Winner: Smith & Wesson
Runner Up: Glock
Third Place: Ruger

Worst three: 1. Korth, 2. Steyr, 3. Khar and Para Ord. (tied)

I am happy to start the (likely lengthy) debate by suggesting Ruger's LCR as an appropriate Best Handgun of the Year. The revolver is innovative, practical, reasonably priced, and is likely to be followed by other revolvers having similar design (and hopefully the same sweet trigger-pull and recoil mitigation).

I'll say Sig. The X-Five series still beats the pants off of most everything else out there. Until someone makes another fixed-barrel auto that I really like, or some revolutionary inovative design that I think is truly noteworthy, I'm going to vote for the Sig X-Five.

I'm voting Dan Wesson. The poll did not state that the handgun had to have become available to the public in the year 2009.

Mostly because their CBOB in 10mm auto has my attention right now. For me they have hit that elusive (and ever changing) balance in price, quality and options in a 1911 platform for my concealed carry needs.

Once I test and confirm my new CBOB's reliability and accuracy, I will be retiring my Colt Delta Elite (that I have carried for over two decades) from its daily carry duty.

As far as guns new in 2009 goes, the LCR is really revolutionary. It's also one of several new guns from Ruger that put them firmly in the personal defense camp, including the LCP, SR9 and the new "sport utility rifle".

The LCR and the revolution in Ruger's philosophy that it seems to represent.

Followed by Ruger's "President's Day" sale of hi-cap mini-14 magazines. That was awesome, and I don't even own a mini.

Then you've got their new piston styled AR, the improvements to the mini platform, the LCP, and their entry into the hi-cap pistol market with the SR-9.

I voted for Walther P99. I have been very impressed with it functionality and ergonomics this year. Too bad I did not buy this gun earlier.

I'm Gonna go with the Taurus PT 709 slim. It really shoots great, feels good in the hand and It's a nice light concealed gun.

I am going to tell you another gun I like, though it would likely never make it into serious consideration, by either the media or the consumer, as Best Gun of the Year...CZ's new Duty. It really is a sweet, accurate shooter, and priced so most can afford it. The fact that the user can readily convert it from "decocker" to "manual safety" is a very nice feature, in my mind (I carry cocked-and-locked). Now I have not yet put thousands of rounds through mine to test its endurance, but I suspect that won't be a problem since CZ historically makes guns that last.

In any event, I am sticking with my original vote for the LCR, but am suggesting the CZ Duty for "honorable mention."

With the introduction of the revolutionary LCR as a follow-up to the LCP, Ruger hit a home run. And, by redefining the AR platform with the introduction of the SR-556 (not a handgun), Ruger turned the home run into a Grand Slam.

I can't wait to see what 2010 brings!

** If you get a chance to fire a LCR, don't pass it up. The trigger does not feel like it belongs on a J-frame style handgun.

I'll be different and say Ruger's limited run distributed by Lipsey's of its mid-frame (New Vaquero, 50th Ann. .357, Old Model/3 Screw) Blackhawk/flattop in .44 Special. One of Ruger's nicest offerings (and said to be best single action fit 'n finish) in years.

Well, I only bought two pistolas in 2009 and one was a Taurus so I would have to vote Kahr.

I have 4 Ruger handguns, and never had an issue with either. They all go bang every time, and never had a FTF on any of the semis.

I like Glock, but what exactly has Glock done different in 2009 then it did in 2008, 2007, etc.

Ruger came up with some innovative things in 2009, and have really gotten away from Bill Ruger's "Honest men only need 10 rounds" bending to the whims of the anti-gun politicians. The LCR created a stir as the first polymer revolver.
