Shotgun Help . . .

I am new to this forum, but I need some help on a shotgun issue.

I am looking into buying a Mossberg 590 12 gauge. It would hold 9 shells, parkerized, polymer, etc.

Now I don't know the benifits of Ghost Ring sights and I only plan to use it for home defense and maybe some hunting, but I don't know about the latter.

Is this a good shotgun, it looks cool, but how good is it?

I also am looking at a Winchester Defender 1300, but I like the Mossberg parkerized finish better.

Help me out everyone. . .

You should plan to get some formal training if you're going
to be using this gun for home defense, and, depending on
which class you take, ghostrings could be a big advantage.
I know that at Frontsight's tactical shotgun class, you need
to do slug shots, and the ghostrings have an advantage for that.
However, at typical home defense ranges, a bead site
is perfectly fine, but since you have the option to get it
with sights that will make it into a more versatile, longer-range
gun, get it!

I have a Rem. 870 Marine, which I had modified with ghostrings,
and I strongly prefer it. It's just about as fast as the bead,
and it's much more capable at longer ranges.

Unfortunately for Remington, they have stopped selling shotguns
with ghostrings to civlians. Shame on them.

You may want to consider a 590A1 from Hans. He takes modifies them making several changes that many Police Departments have adopted and are recommended by many in the industry. You can check out his web site at: http://www.vangcomp.com

In the classes I have taken, they perform very well with a much better controlled pattern than a standard defense shotgun.

1. Yes, it's a great shotgun. I prefer the location of the Mossberg safety over the Winchester 1300.

2. Yes, get ghost rings. You will need them, as mentioned above, for slugs.

3. Sorry, I don't know much about hunting with shotguns.

If you want to hunt get the 870 combo with a 28" multi choked barrel and a 20" rifle sighted improved cyl. you can get a 7 shot extention and add or remove it quickly for hd/hunting. Mossberg also makes a combo but they use a 24 inch barrel which imho is a little too long for hd.

I take "Serious" shotguns seriously(G), and regard the Mossy 590 as an acceptable choice. I prefer the 870, of course, but the Mossy seems to be good, if not quite as long lived at the 870 under heavy use.But, either one is capable of lasting longer than we are.

Regardless of your choice, keep safety in mind at all times, and get some training.
