9mm ammunition question

I am entering a bullseye competition. My handgun is a CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical. My CZ is accurate as it is and I don't notice much difference between 115 gr Tula, Federal, Remington UMC, and Speer Lawman.

I understand the value of practice and I can keep it to 1-1.5 in at 7 yards currently. I just want to make sure I'm getting the most from my target ammo as well.

Without getting into reloading (I don't reload), how do I determine what is most accurate? Or is there a retail ammo that some of you experienced competition shooters use?

Of what you have listed the Speer Lawman has been the best of the bunch to me. Never had a problem with it and seems more consistent then the others atleast in my guns. I have also had really good accuracy results with Hornady and Black Hills ammo. Give Hornady Steel Match a shot.

Thanks willmc. I will get some Hornady Steel Match and Black Hills. I think I'm just going to pick up a bunch of different stuff (115/124/147 gr) to see if anything really makes a difference. The surprising thing is that Tula 115 gr has been just as accurate as Federal 115 gr at 7 yards. I don't mind paying more for competition ammo but I also don't want to throw money away either.

7 yards is no distance to try and determine the accuracy potential of a pistol or any particular ammunition. It is just too close. I don't know what type of bullseye competition you are thinking of entering, but it isn't going to be shot at 21 feet.

If you want to try and find out what store bought ammunition is the most accurate out of your pistol you need to shoot very carefully from a sandbag off of a bench at at least 25 yards, and then 50 yards. One of your brands will prove to shoot a tighter group.

Great advice! Also a specific manufacturer ammo load that proves to be most accurate for one shooters gun may not be the case for another shooter. IMO it would not suprise me if Speer Lawman was among the most accurate for most pistols as far as FMJ ammo.

If you can use a rest, you will eliminate human error.


I found the Blazer Brass to be very accurate as well. Match ammo would most likely be better though.

While anything is fine at 7 yards, I give the nod to Black Hills and Federal American Eagle.

And a lot of people report the Federal Hydra-Shoks being accurate for them. IMO opinion there is better 9mm SD ammo out there and it's pretty expensive stuff for practice and target shooting but it can be oddly accurate for some people so there you have it...
