Guess I belong here now...
So those of you that already know me on these boards should know me pretty much exclusively from the General Handguns and Semiautos boards. That's because I've always had a deep-seated passion for service automatics and more or less wrote off revolvers for the antiquated folk
Well, I walked into my local gun shop to scope out the used deals and walked out with this for $485. It's an S&W 617 .22LR 6" 6-shot - I bought it for the flawless triggers S&W is known for (and this particular example had an especially flawless single action pull) as my plinker/target .22. Here's the problem though, I haven't even fired this thing yet and I'm already so enamored with the ergonomics and workmanship of it that I'm afraid I've unleashed some sort of "potato chip" factor. I'm beginning to look for ways to rationalize owning more wheelguns, particularly of the S&W variety. This looks like it could get expensive |

I am fairly new at this gun addiction problem. I started out wanting a couple semi-auto's. Actually have one but ended up (so far) with two S&W Model 60's. Guess which ones I carry and hve put nice grips on and have shined to a mirror finish. Welcome to the club!

Your bald spot just grew a tad, and your sideburns are turning white. Welcome to the antiquated club. I bet it didn't hurt as much as you thought it would. I can't afford a Swiss watch, but revolvers are a fair substitute. Now you need a classy rifle and a SxS fine shotgun. Jodhpurs are optional.

While I don't (yet) have a side-by-side shotgun, I do have a Ruger 10/22 Target with deadly-pretty bluing and a gorgeous laminate stock.
It may not be terribly expensive, but I think it's pretty classy (also quite accurate). But you're right, it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would |

Sweet, sweet wheelgun, Tex! My uncle has the exact same model and it is a blast to shoot and accurate besides! We take it to woods and shoot squirrel and rabbit. Fun, plain and simple. Good on you.

gun and gas!
This is an example of the mental gymnastics I do when I feel some guilt around a firearm purchase: "how many fillups does a new revolver cost"? About 5 for that 617; and how long, respectively, does each activity last?
See.....feel better already! |

Revolvers have a tendency to multiply. Back in February I had none. I now have 3 and counting .

If you want to shoot a Smith without guilt, go buy yourself a beat-up 4" tapered barrel Model 10 for <$200 from J&G Sales (they have a heap of 'em) and have at it.

I have a Model 10 Smith that I bought used and it's the best shooting pistol I own.
$200 for one that shoots well and does'nt look too bad is a fantastic price for a Smith. |

Of all those, the 28-2 has the greatest "gotta have it" factor for me.

You should see my Dad's 4" M29-2, drrrroooooooolllllll! I've been trying to talk him into selling it to me for two years now. If you really want to see a sexy looking sixgun, find a pic of a Model 27 with a 3 1/2" barrel.

One of the guys at the local Gunstore just picked up a 3 1/2" Pre Model 27. I'm so jealous.

I was a semi-auto man but I've gone the other way now. I bought three wheel guns last year so my wife believes that any more would be irrational. If you don't have the same constraints, go buy all of the ones you want. There are a couple of more that I would love to have, but will have to find a way to rationalize it with the spouse first.

Webleymkv,
Beautiful grips on the S&W 28-2. What kind are they and where can I find them. I would love to have some PigPen |

S&W revolvers DO have a tendency to multiply. Since January of this year I've bought the guns in the picture below, which are a 629, a 620, and a 60. And I've got a 686+ with 6" barrel (looks alot like the 629) on laywaway at my local gun dealer.
It's a good thing that Maryland restricts us to one handgun a month, or I would be broke buying Smith and Wessons. |

Since this is a noob thread it gives me the chance to ask all you S&W veterans a sort of noobish question.
Does the 686 Plus (7 rounder) actually have a wider cylinder than the normal (6 round) 686? Also, what's the difference between the 686PP and the normal 686 6"? I can't for the life of me notice anything. |

Tex,
previous posters are correct....THEY DO MULTIPLY Years ago I had only semi-autos. Now, a glance in my safe reveals wheel guns outnumber semis 4 to 1. For some reason, one S&W Victory model wasn;t enough, I had to have 2. Two Ruger Blackhawks weren't enough, I had to have three. etc. etc. and so on..... |

I guess I am old school. I have a side by side shotgun, in 16 gauge to boot!!! I'm sure when I get some funds, I'll find myself getting some wheelguns too!

To answer the question about 686 vice 686+ cylinder diameter, the 686+ has thinner cylinder walls that allow seven rounds to fit in the same diameter cylinder as six rounds on the 686.
