Bullseye, 4.5 grains, under a 230gr LRN. This is safe with pretty much any primer case combo as long as you seat properly. You should get around 750-750fps in an officer model. A nice light load.

I havent loaded any 148's for a while, but the last ones that I did were 3.0 of 231. My "standard" 38 load is the 158 grain swc and 4.5 of 231. Both are out of the Winchester manual. Same manual lists a number of .40 loads using 231. You can get one at any gunshop or from their webpage.

I like the ballistics that I get with PowerPistol in 9mm and .40 (I always load lighter than 180's in .40), but I really dislike like the flash. I just bought a few pounds of VV N340 and VV N350, but I haven't tried them out yet as they haven't arrived. I like the 135 gr round shoulder from Berrys for the .40 ... I have also used BullsEye on the .40 and .357, and I didn't NOTICE the flash, but I didn't mix rounds with a different powder like I recently did with the .40 and 9mm.
Bottom line: Jury's still out on the VV, but I have high hopes! Saands |

Pet loads
glock23er:
9 mm---I have a couple of friends who shoot many thousands of 116 RNL and 116 FMJ in steel plate matches, both with 4.8 gr. of H. Universal. I've just loaded 2,000 124 JHPs with 4.6 gr. Universal, and they do well in four different guns. They seem quite accurate in my Browning High Power. .38 Spl--- I second maxwayne's load of 4.5 gr. W-231 with a 158 gr. SWC. I loaded a few hundred of these recently with 4.2 gr. of 231, just to be a bit easier on my lightweight snubs. Elder son is happy with a 130 FMJRN over 4.0 Win Super Target in his 6" Colt Officers Model Special. Mild (~760)but accurate and satisfying, and sure loads slickly from speedloaders. CAUTION--Below load is for all steel revolvers only--Medium to large frame only. Use at your own risk: Over the past three decades, I loaded many thousands of 158 to 165 SWCs with 5.0 gr. Unique. It is a great long range load, but definitely +P. .45 ACP--- 230 gr. FMJRN with 6.5 Unique is full-power, factory equivalent. More pleasant to shoot in most pistols is 230 LRN with 5.2 of W-231. This is a bit over 800 fps from a five-inch Govt model. .40 Auto-- anybody's 170 to 180 lead with 5.5 gr. H. Universal. I've loaded much hotter, but this is plenty for ppractice and won't strain your pistol. Same powder charge with 180 FMJ--It will probably feel hotter, with slightly less velocity. I'm sure you're aware: Use caution in loading lead bullets for the Glock .40 pistols. CLEAN FREQUENTLY! I don't personally know anyone who's had trouble with this, but there are a lot of Ka-Boom stories out there. Best, Johnny |

I found a good accurate 9mm load for PPC shooting (or bullseye shooting in general). A 121 gr. Hornady Action Pistol HP backed by 3.5 grains of Titegroup.
The recoil is really light, you feel the slide come back more than anything. If I do my part it will hold the 10 ring at 25 yards, shot out of a 92F. Another favorite round is a 148 gr. Hollow Base WC over 2.7 gr of Titegroup. This from one of the top three shooters in Match 1500 in NC. |
