Today was the day, so a thanks for all the advice!

Yes, today I finally put pen to paper and notes to counter.

Regardless what I might have thought/feared, ultimately there really was only one logical choice under the circumstances and I made it today.

I have just wiped down, cleaned and liberally lubed my very own "CZ 858 Tactical 2P", AKA the VZ58.

Assembled from a dwindling stock of military parts, I bought one of the last 3 being sold in the local CZ retailer following the likely final run of these rifles out of Czech.

I'm still amazed at how small it is and find it hard to believe it is a 16" barrel like my old AR which seemed way more serious and less toy-like, despite the MOE plastics.

Needless to say, I've not fired it, but I hope to soon.

Toy-like in size, perhaps, but not in build: Having examined it I feel confident in saying that this, the cheapest semi-auto in the country is probably also the second best after the AR15, exotica such as the AUG aside. I've handled AK, and frankly they felt less solid and recoiled more and the milled receiver of the CZ just says "I'm solid". In terms of take-down and parts it is a breeze! Easier than the AR and that was not hard.

I've resigned myself to the fact that at least some, if not most of my shooting will be bimetal stuff and I will do my best to mitigate the negatives of this with frequent, thorough cleaning as well as moderation in shooting at the range! (Unless it was a bad day at work in which case a spot of mag-dump fun may be in order).
The main thing is that I've come to realise it is not going to be easy to wear this gun out and so I can expect it to serve me well if I do the same.

So thanks to all who helped steer me down this path or at least confirm my my sense of direction!!

Yours,
Happy Pond.

Congratulations on a good gun purchase.

Buy a good amount of magazines and ammo, learn to shoot it, take care of it and it will serve you well. I love mine and people find it surprisingly accurate.

Any pictures? Would be interested to see how your local variants come equipped

How much and can you afford a 2nd one?
A 2nd would allow you to have a shooter and a museum piece / safe queen.

I like 7.62x39 AKM's and have 6 of them plus a SKS.

While the VZ58 are nice rifles, they would be an orphan in my collection. Make that a red headed step child.

Second one is not an option, I'm afraid.

Long story short: you can read about it in my European rifle buying thread in the semi-auto rifle sub-forum if you're interested.

Pics

Here are the sights. I could have had one with a closed shroud over the FSP, but went with open:

Here's a full side rifle view:

And another standing proud:

Genuine CZ too... I dislike you a little now.

Can it accept a muzzle device? If so, a break can work wonders on keeping the muzzle steady. I just got a simple cheap one for mine, and it helped a lot on how the rifle felt when shooting.

Yes, it can although I found the CZ to be very soft shooting, compared to the AK.

I may buy a flash-hider from the Bore-Lock range of Ase Utra suppressors where the muzzle device is threaded to take the suppressor, instead of having to remove a muzzle device to then fit the can...

Mine had a metal folding stock and slant break... so the fiancé was not pleased, the break helped a lot, and a different stock made it pleasant.

A break may not be remiss should you do a competition though.

Mine also had a folding stock and slant brake which slapped the face, but it now wears a compensator which fixed the issue.

I am jealous of yours. The century kit build models with folding stock are common here, but the genuine CZ fixed stock models are a much more rare bird
