pistol question
Is a 22lr pistol under the same category as say a 9mm or 45 apc in that you have to be 21 to own?

As far as Federal law and most states are concerned, yes, they are the same. Some states do allow 18 year olds to own handguns, though they still can't legally buy them from a Federal firearms dealer.

Caliber/cartridge is normally irrelevant when discussing age restrictions on handguns.
