Sig Mosquito Or S&W MP Or? Large .22

It has been a while since I looked at .22 pistols. Wanting to see the better choices for large full size .22. So far I think I have it narrowed down to 2 choices. Anyone own both of these? If so are they both reliable with a fairly substantial feel to them?
Thanks everyone

I'm in the same boat, I want a service style .22 and started looking at the Mosquito again and the M&P. I figured maybe by now they have fixed the Mosquito's issues. I still see mixed reviews on it though, much better than a few years ago but certainly not 100%. I see great reviews on the M&P so far though and I do like the feel of it. I'm leaning towards the M&P22 myself but am still open on the decision (I already have a NEOS and a 22A and my son has a Buckmark ... all are good guns but none have a service type of feel to them).

One thing for me right now, the slide on the M&P is machined aluminum and seems to be of good quality. Not sure what the slide on the Mosquito is but I've heard it marks up easily.

Consider a CZ-75B Kadet or Sig classic 22,,,

The Sig Mosquito may be getting better but it is still made of Zamak,,,
That and it's iffy reputation for performance makes me leery,,,
Spend a little bit more money and get a better gun.

Sig makes a "Classic 22" on three of their models,,,
These are convertable up to 9mm, 40 S&W, and .357 Sig using their X-Change Kit.

P-226 Classic 22 is one example,,,
This way you get a real pistol that is chambered for .22 LR.

If you are considering a CZ-75B Kadet,,,
You need to hurry and make your purchase,,,
CZ is discontinuing the complete pistol this year,,,
Soon you will only be able to buy the Kadet Adapter Kit.

I own the CZ-75B Kadet and can attest to it's fine performance,,,
I usually run CCI Mini Mags through the gun,,,
But it performs with Federal Bulk Pack too.

Just something else to consider.

I have the Sig mosquito and haven't had any problems. It's 90 percent the size of the p226. The trigger is meh is my only real complaint. Ammo wise its shot everything I've pit through it just fine. Mini mags, remmington bulk, and now federal bulk. Get the occasional ftf but that's more the ammo than gun

My dad has the m&p and likes it. I've shot it and liked it too. He hasn't had problems shooting federal bulk through it

I'm with Aarond.
I own both the Kadet and SIG P226 22 Classic and they are truly full sized "real" counterparts to their centerfire brethren.

Ruger Mark II or II or Browning Buck Mark.

Either option is inexpensive, accurate, reliable, and will last longer than you will.

When I ordered my CZ-75B Kadet,,,
The Evil Pawn Shop Guy charged me $599.95.

Yesterday he had a never been fired Sig P226 Classic 22 in his case,,,
His asking price for the gun, 2 mags, and all the papers was $565.00

I fond,,, eerrr,,, handled the Sig and it was nice,,,
It too felt like a real gun chambered for .22 LR,,,
This is the gun you can convert to centerfire.

Yeah, I got a MkII and while it is quite accurate, reliable and durable, it just doesn't have that fun factor like my M&P22 or SR22 has. In the case of the M&P22 and SR22, both have been very accurate for what they are and a real blast to shoot. Both of them gobble up Remington Gold bullet Walmart bulk box ammo without problems so the need for expensive (as far as .22 ammo goes) mini-mags isn't a problem. Speaking of accuracy, in both of the follow pictures, these were fired using CCI mini-mags (during the initial 200 round break-in period for my M&P22) from a distance of 15m from a prone unsupported position:

The M&P22. I know, I should have adjusted the sights first but since this was mainly for group size and function, I didn't before I took this picture:

The SR22. Not quite as good as the M&P22 but still not bad and a very compact pistol to boot:

While my M&P22 takes any light my full size M&P45 does, I don't have any pictures of it with a light mounted. The SR22 however due to the very short rail is more limited on what light I can use. I looked at a TLR3 but wasn't too keen on how it was kind of just hanging out there. Looked sort of spindley and delicate. I did however go with the new Crimson Trace Railmaster light and this thing fits like it was made for the SR22! It's not what I would call a quick detach design but it is pretty bright for its size, not as snag-prone as a TLR3 and has been a pretty good performer so far.

About the Rugers and Buckmarks,,,

They are fine single action target style pistols,,,
I own two 22/45's and like them both a lot,,,
I also have a pair of the Beretta NEOS,,,
But they aren't like a full size gun.

The Ruger MK pistols, Ruger 22/45, Browning Buckmark, S&W 22-A, and the Beretta NEOS are all single action target pistols.

They are not in the same class as the guns the OP was inquiring about,,,
He was asking (I believe) about guns that feel and operate like a full size centerfire pistol.

So unless your centerfire is a 1911 style gun,,,
None of the big five target pistols are what he wants to know more about.

S&W M&P, CZ-75B Kadet, and the Sig-Sauer Classic 22's,,,
Are all that come to mind right now.

If someone knows of other steel or alloy frame guns in this category,,,
I would love for you to tell us what they are,,,
I would like to read up on them.

Chia-Pet,,, eerrr,,, Chiappa is now making a Beretta 92 look-alike,,,
Also there are several nice 1911 style .22 pistols out there,,,
But from what I have read they all have Zamak slides.

I just can't make myself buy a Zamak pistol,,,
That's why I can't recommend the Sig Mosquito and Walther P-22.

But hey,,,
That's just my opinion.

Aarond

I own three 1911 22s:
A Colt Ace - steel frame and slide
A Kimber Rimfire Target - aluminum frame and slide
and
A RIA XT22 - steel frame and slide.

The Colt is the prettiest of the three but it's also the poorest shooter. That floating chamber spoils it's accuracy.

Thanks very much for all the replies. Great information here. I have thought about the Ruger but somehow it is just not for me. Fine gun, just a matter of preference. I like the sounds of the Sig classic but no clue how much those go for at this.
Smith sounds like a strong contender.
One of the guys who works at and indoor range I went to said the Mosquito had lots of problems. This is a place that rents you various types of guns so you can check them out.
I have a Glock G19 that my wife finally tried shooting. She doesn't like it. I told her I would research the .22 but it needs to be as beefy as possible so she can get used to as close as possible to a full size pistol.

Lets take a typical Ruger Mark III Target as an example.

With a 5.5" barrel and weight of 42oz (more than a Government-length all-steel 1911), it's hard to call this anything other than a full-size gun.

Lets not pick nits gentlemen,,,

Yes, I could have chosen better words than "full size",,,
But the intent was to differentiate between single-action target pistols,,,
And those pistols that are the same size and action type as many duty weapons in use.

While the Rugers, Brownings, Beretta's, and S&W 22A are fine pistols,,,
They do not emulate/duplicate the manual of arms of a duty gun.

Now I'm waiting for someone to jump up say,,,
The 22/45 emulates a 1911.

The OP's words were "large full size",,,
I'm just using the same terminology he used.

Aarond is right. I am trying for something vaguely at least like a full size duty gun along the lines, roughly, like a Glock or Sig. I used to have a Walther .22 and it worked fine but was small for my wife's hands and really small for me. It could be I am not being realistic with what I am trying to accomplish. Wish the Walther .22 had bigger grips and longer barrell.

I've compared the SR22 and MP22 before purchase.. went with MP22 for few reasons..

- SR22, while very nicely built, felt very small and "toyish"
- LGS showed me MP22 along with MP 9mm side by side. Sizes are 95% identical. I believe MP 9mm has changeable backgrip, 22 does not.
- MP22 just feels really good in your hand like a "full sized" semi-auto.

There is a post somewhere where I go into extensive review of mp22. But it's a nice accurate shooter that's extremely fun to shoot. GL

Advantage Arms makes a .22lr conversion for your G19.
I hear they work well.

MTHall720,,,

Right now the Evil Pawn Shop Guy in my hometown,,,
Has a Sig-Sauer P226 Classic 22 for $565.00,,,
I think that's what he's asking anyways.

So they are not cheap by any means,,,
At least when you compare them to .22 target pistols.

Buds Gun Shop has the S&W M&P for $337.84,,,
That's not a bad price at all for a good gun.

I've never fired the M&P,,,
But I know two people that own them,,,
One person swears it is one of the finest guns he owns.

The second isn't quite so ebullient about it,,,
But he says it's a nice gun and he shoots it a lot.

Microgunner suggested you look at a .22 conversion for your G-19,,,
That's sound advice and is an option worth exploring as well.

Hope we haven't confused you too much.

Aarond

Thanks again to everyone. I am going to be right at home on this forum. I used to have multiple guns when I lived out west. Now down to just one. Living in Maryland is a huge change from the other 3 states where I had a CCW. Maryland is not a gun friendly place. Criminals get to have whatever they want though.

The price on the M&P is better than what I can get locally.
I wonder if the conversion kit is real easy to swap out.
Wish the Walther .22 was bigger but sounds like the Smith is a great choice
Wish the budget allowed for the Sig classic.

+1 for the Sig classic line. Aarond's EPSG's(evil pawnshop guy) price is about what I would expect for those at an LGS, if you shop around you can get them for a little less online, but then you have to factor possible shipping and transfer fees vs LGS price and possible tax.

I used to own a Mosquito. It was probably the most comfortable pistol I have ever owned. That being said, it wouldnt really run on anything other the CCI Minimags. Even then, there were a few hiccups. I ended up getting rid of it because the CCI ammo was not very cost effective, like the bulk packs of .22lr are.

Big little gun

I have a 1911 Colt .22. Virtually identical in feel, it has extensive commonality with the parent, just as a .22 cal upper on an AR. I don't say that to disdain the poly-plastic pistols you propose. It's just that I do find some merit in the arguments usually found on the " Best plastic AR posts". Now if the USP Tactical was chambered in .22, I'd be right there with you.

Is the Colt 1911 a fairly hard to find discontinued gun?
