Sabots?

I came across these things called Sabots today on the Net. They're a little plastic case you insert a smaller projectile than the caliber of your gun.
these particular ones were in 30cal where you insert a .243 or .223 caliber projectile. Has anyone had any experience with these? seems pretty pointless to me but its says they're very accurate and get your bullet speeds up to 4000+ fps while wearing out the barrel less. anyone have an opinion with these things?

Ive heard interesting things about sabots but have not tried them myself. I'm not opposed to the idea, I just don't have the resources to test items like that right now. I stick with standard ammunition.
