Your best: .338 Win Mag

I'm starting to work up loads for the new howitzer, and I'd like to hear about your favorites. Right now I have on hand Re19, Re22, IMR4350 and both 200 and 225 grain Nosler Accubonds. Best accuracy is my goal, since power and velocity are not issues with this round. First quarry will be elk in mixed meadow and timber. I will shoot 400 yards if need be, but if they're further than that, I'll move.

I shoot Sierra 215g spbt, and the Speer 225 spbt with good results. I use IMR 4831 and IMR 7828 powders. Both powders had good groups at 100 in the 215g bullet, 4831 was more accurate in the 225. Can not comment on ELK as of lately, but would use for long range hunting.

Thanks Jim. Looks like not many .338 guys out there. Pity--looks to be a great round, and recoil is IMHO overrated. I will report my results when the range reopens in March.

A very experienced friend of mine swears by the Barnes X bullets for the 338.

I had very good accuracy with the 250 grain Sierra. Shot a nice bull elk with it, and it penetrated more than 4 feet of meat, left a nice wound channel, and exited.

After I had finished developing my loads for the 338, I was anal about getting the accuracy loads precisely equal, trickling in the weight kernal by kernal.

While watching a friend load for his 338, I was horrified as he dipped the case into a container of IMR 4831, leveled it off with a butter knife, then stuffed a bullet in and seat it.

His method produced groups as small or smaller than any I produced.
