I live in a studio apartment. My stratagy is grab the .45 out of the holster that is between my head board and the wall. The only closed room in the apartment is the bathroom. The window is so small that it would be hard to fit anything larger than a 12 pack of soda through it.
My dog sleeps in the house at the foot of my bed. He tells me when someone is at the door. While he is an awsome cow dog, he is not attack trained(never will be either) I prefer him to be the lovable, playful, hyperactive ball, and frizbee cathing machine that he is. There are to many children that live in the neighborhood that if one were to come in the yard after a ball and were bit it would not be a pretty scene. (Especilay since the city enacted a viscious dog ordnance). As it is the neighborhood kids love to play with him when I take him to the park.
Ok back to the topic. It depends on the layout of each home, and the person's situation.
