Shooting principles

Aim, Breath, Target aquistion, Trigger. My frined in the armys been helping me zero my rifles. he says shots to the side are from trigger pull and shots astray up and down or from breathing. I fire after I breath. After the recoil I cycle sights back to my eyes. He says the only form that matters for the shot is before and during the trigger pulll. What other pointers are reccommended for improved shooting?what do fellow shooter think about his adivce.

First suggestion is to change your title to read "Shooting Principles". A "principal" is a person, head of school for instance, and I don't think you are advocating shooting people. I think you mean "basic fundamentals" which are "principles".

If you're talking about handgun shooting, the most important is trigger pull.
If you do everything else right but have improper trigger pull, you won't hit
anything.

Next is sight alignment.

After that breathing.

After that follow through, firm grip, ...

One of the fundamentals of shooting that is greatly overlooked is the ability to RELAX.

The USAMU pistol shooting guide mentions that on nearly every page, its mentioned in Blackwater's Basic Pistol Shooting CD, its mentioned in every High Power and ISU shooting manuel.

I did think about taking up meditation to help me in relaxing, but that seemed
too metro-sexual (read gay)

Gay? Are samurai gay? Shaolin Monks? What about the Blue Angels and USAF Thunderbirds (yep, before every show, they close their eyes and visualize everything they will do)? What about professional athletes?

I've been doing EEG/Neurofeedback therapy for my adult ADD. It's a form of facilitated meditation and it's been doing wonders in every area of my life, including shooting. This, combined with practice, has squelched my flinch tendencies and now I'm getting tight groups.

All meditation is taking your brain to a "gym." You've got parts of your brain that control the limbic system that are not active enough. Meditation gets these parts active again and cranks up your alpha brain waves which make you calmer, more aware, and in control. Nothing gay about that.

This sounds like Transcendental Marksmenship. You become one with the pistol, the target becomes (reluctantly) one with the bullet.

I stand corrected. It's not metrosexual. Don't hurt me.

"One of the fundamentals of shooting that is greatly overlooked is the ability to RELAX:

It is hard to RELAX when people are shooting at you!
