41 mag with 170g lswc
I'm looking for a loading for my 41 mag T/C contender using a 170g lswc. i have W231, H110, and IMR4227 for powders.looking for a midrange load for plinking and close range deer hunting. thanks in advance. Kyle

That light bullet will move pretty fast without much push. 9 or 10 grains of 231 will push it 1200 fps from a 6 inch revolver barrel. That only fills the case half way, though, so a dangerous double-charge easily fits into the case. The other powders you have are too slow to work with the light bullet. H4227 will only get to the same velocity by filling the case (21.5 grains) and cost a lot more to shoot while still generating too little pressure to burn cleanly. H110/296 requires minimum pressures to burn without squibbing out in a revolver, and even a full case would have trouble reaching that pressure under that light bullet, and when it did work it would be running about 1500 fps which will usually cause leading if your bullet doesn't have a gas check or if your bore isn't smoothed up for lead by firelapping.

that seems high on the 231 as they show 7.4 grains starting load for a 170 grain jacketed bullet. i use the h110 for my heavier bullets.
