Where do I shoot? Debating between 3 big ranges outside of town since I'm done w the indoor range, it was just such a gross experience each time. One of the big ranges has a 1000 yd range! Looking shooting at whichever one is most active in IDPA.

Free city maintained outdoor range, has a main, wide 300 yard bay, and the left side is uncovered with trap setup. All ranges but one have covers and pad with benches, the 100 yard range has only a cover.
To the right, 100 yard bay, no real good pictures, never use it. Far right side, 2 side by side 25 yard pistol bays, one pictured here, Left of the main bay is the 80 yard range, Best outdoor range I've ever used...now we have to find that beehive that is somewhere around, scouts will come out to "watch" us shoot. |

Right HERE.
It doesn't look like much from that angle, but the rocks represent the crest of a (mostly) a dirt berm maybe 8 meters tall and maybe 100 meters long. Nice backstop. It's great. I've been shooting there for 30 years and have yet to run into another person out there. I'm not like everyone else on this board. To me, shooting is a pretty solitary endeavor. I've been to ranges where there are other people and I hate it. If I have to have another person standing near me, I simply won't go. |

Mr Grump ... that is a fine setup you have there, I'm envious.

There are a few indoor ranges within minutes of my house if I want to shoot my pistol. If I want to shoot my shotgun or .22 lr I can drive to some hunting property about 20 mins. from my house. If I want to shoot some distance (100-600 yards) I can drive either 1hr 45 minutes to one spot or 2 hours to another.

Wow, those pics. And that's all free??!!
When I think how that compares to my my range (picture a dirty, dark, smokey hallway) it makes me want to cry. And I pay for the privilege to shoot there Better than nothing I guess. Arizona for the win! |

It is completely free, and the city maintains it well. The drawbacks - one porta potty, and it took a major effort from local activists to get that. No water, bring your own.
Other than that, it's heaven. |

Twenty years ago WA used to be wide open for Rec shooting. And then the gvt started shutting it all down. You can still find spots, but it's increasingly difficult.
I belong to Shooting Sports Northwest in Bothell, WA. Indoor. 10 lanes plus reactive steel. They have a website, google them. For rifles i go to Kenmore Gun Ranges or Everett Sportsmans club. Both open to public. Kenmore has trap and 5 stand too. Rifle ranges suck compared to the great outdoors though.

I grew up shooting in the back yard with distances up to about 150 yds. I never replicated that after I got out of school.
Currently, I shoot at one of two outdoor ranges. One is about a 5 minute drive and the other is about an hour. There are two indoor ranges within about 20 mimutes of me also, but I seldom shoot at either place. |

I have a membership at a local outdoor range, $35 a year.
In the summer I usually just go to the National Forest for free.

I'm lucky to have several ranges within a 20 minute drive. Two of those are within 2 miles (one is a county park). Also Bass Pro is close to my office. I've gone there during lunch, but they're too busy on the weekends.

Some of the things you guys describe sound like places I'd like to go when I die.
I'm very jealous.

Where do you shoot?
Belong to a 500 member private shooting club. Range is situated on 240 acres. Club does have many Target Lane Areas to cover everything from a 22 caliber to a Barrett 50 in rifle and a couple trap and one skeet range also. We have a Club House with all amenity's one would want/need. I also hunt on 160 acre parcel of woodlands. It too has a 150 yrd flat target lane with a cement pad and permanent table for sighting in on. Neighbors ask to use it and are always given permission too. Benefit for us both: They get the use of my shooting Lane. I get their Watch Dog Eyes on my cabin & place when I'm not there. "a Great arrangement!!"

Being on 90 acres of farm, I simply step out back.
I DO have some serious "property duties" to perform. Been about a month since I went to a "big city" and attended a formal shotgun range, and over a year since I went to a "big city" to shoot rim-fire matches.

My 500 yard range - my house at upper left.
Closeup of the 8' x 8' butt with a 42" steel plate hanging on it. I had just shot a 3 shot group with the Sharps pictured above measuring 3 3/8". I've got a Cowboy Action setup right off my deck. A couple of foot tripped traps, several other target butts at 7, 15, 25, 50, 75, 100, and every 50 yards thereafter out to 500 yards, and enough room to go out to at least 1500 yards by cutting down a handful of trees.

I have a couple of places. Im a member of a private range with 150 members.... Not the prettiest range around but its 10 minutes from the house. It has a 25 yard pistol range, 100-300 yard rifle range, 75 yard rimfire only range, shotgun range for clays and a archery range. All for under $100 a year.
Also 10 minutes away the hunting club I am in I can outside of hunting season shoot anywhere thats safe on their 8000 acres. I can get 400+ yards easy there. |

Finally went to the big outdoor range near me.
The bays were setup like ArmoredMan's pix. I had a bay all to myself. Has 1000 yard rifle range too!

I have a covered "carport" (12X28) on one side of my garage/shop that has never had a car in it. One end is covered shooting position, the other end is wood shed. We mostly shoot >30 meters from that covered position, The lane is 35 meters to the backstop. Then we have another lane, with a different backstop that can go 200 meters that we don't use as much. (no cover)
About 60 Ft from the front door for the 30 meter, about 300' to the other lane. |
