Wow... what happened. 257 Weatherby Mag

I am posting this for a Co-worker. (I want to make that clear)
Please view the attached photos and give your Hypothesis.
9 shots were fired and two of the brass are pictured. The remaining brass look fine. These rounds were reloaded 3 years ago and a few have been previously fired without issue. I do not reload any high pressure rifle calibers myself and I've never seen this before. The cases in question were loaded with 110 gr accubond bullets 63 gr of IMR 4831.

Agree, chamber did not "seal" have it checked by a good smith.

Odd .... when I load my 8mm too light, the cases just get sooty .... must be something peculiar to the Weatherby ...

Hornady lists 63.2 grains of IMR 4831 as maximum for the 110gr. Interbond so the load level is not light? Recommended to use Federal 215 magnum primers in this caliber. Possibility of incomplete combustion of the entire powder charge? Weak primer ignition? Anyway it does look like not enough pressure to force the neck and shoulders out to seal the gas which causes the case to buckle? Tumbling media blocking the primer pocket flash hole? Just low pressure for sure.

The first image on the other thread shows a really sooty case ... that would have been a give away.

Yup; low pressure. The only time that happened to me was when I had a case head separation in a Ruger #1 in 7mm mag. Fortunately I killed the hog with it 'cause the gun was inoperable 'til I got it home. Were the conditions unusually cold or was he using non-magnum primers?

Agreed its about pressure/obturation/seal.Weatherby has a tradition of freebore.Add a boat tail bullet,maybe some throat wear.

Bullet cylindrical dia is free of the case neck before obturation.Pressure has a path between the case and the chamber wall .

What happened? Pressure got trapped between the case body and chamber, when the pressure dropped inside the case pressure outside the case between the chamber and case body crushed the case ‘neatly’.

There are times ‘time is a factor’.

Not likely caused by the gun...no need for a gunsmith. It is a hand loading issue. However, if it was happening with factory loads, some adjustment to the chamber (less free-bore) may be prudent.

Diagnosis
The incorrect primer was used. Requires a mag primer and a std was used.
He learned a lesson.
