My flintlock elk!

In Wyoming last Monday. He came in to a cow elk call. I was shooting a traditional flintlock pushing a round ball cast from wheel weight lead. He doesn't have a monster rack, but I'm thrilled!

He staggered and limped 40 yards before dropping... just over the edge of a hill, making it much more difficult for us!

I'll post pictures of the rifle later.

Congrats on a great shot and a beautiful flinter. I lost my enthusiasm for shooting large game with a flinter, after spending an entire summer tweaking mine and feeling confident enough to take out for deer season, seeing a nice buck and pointing and pffffssssst, no boom, the worst part is the buck waited til I reprimed and left only whem I snapped the frizzen closed. After seeing your kill, I may have to spend another summer prepping my flinter again.

The elk was at 40 yards when I pulled the trigger.

Skadoosh asked for pictures of my rifle. Here they are.

The metal engraving was done by Chuck Dixon of Dixon's Muzzleloading Shop in Kempsville, PA. I did all the rest.

Anyone who would loose sleep over a miss-fire should not hunt with a flintlock.
Crazy thing is, I have carried mine all day long on rainy days here in MN and my rifle is very reliable, but when hunting in the mountains I have had many flashed pans, fuse actions (read pffffsssssst) and this year 2 miss-fires.
As long as I have a clean miss,miss-fire I am happy.
Heck, a well unplanned flash in the pan is not all that bad! All the excitement anyone could ask for and a reprieve from all that work!
Had the smoke pole out today for the 1st time since my hunt last month and it fired flawlessly.
The young lady is a nice visiting from Alaska. This was her first time firing a flintlock.
