Hi,

I purchased a revolver supposedly retired from a police department. It's a double action only model 64-5 with serial number BSZ0xxx.

Any information about date born, etc?

1979/80.
Built on the "N" frame, model 57's (41 Mag) were available in blue or nickle finish from 1964 till 2005.
A fixed sight version (model 58) was offered for a short while also.
The stainless steel version was offered from 1986 on as the model 657.

S&W has recently reintroduced the 57 and 58 under their "Classic" series.

A couple of other things that may be of interest: The Model 60 was Smith's first stainless revolver, introduced in 1965. The "no dash" was manufactured until 1988, when it was replaced by the 60-3, which had a new yoke retention design. What happened to the -1 and -2? They were limited production runs with special features, manufactured in 1972 and 1987, respectively.

The Model 60 is essentially the stainless version of the Model 36, and when it was introduced in 1965 it was numbered within the Model 36 series, eventually changing to an "R" prefix (the M36 got a "J" prefix) in 1969. According to SCSW, the first Model 60 was approximately at SN 401754 (in 1965), and the last of the Chief's Special series prior to the switch to the letter prefix SNs was SN 786544 (in 1969). So, yours falls within the earlier part of that range.

Wow, great thread.....I just about an hour ago picked up a 686 2 1/2" 7 shot, pre lock beauty...
The number is CEP0XXX, could someone give me an idea when that was made?
What a beautifull gun too, never used in mint shape, my first revolver...

Looking at the info here, would it be correct in assuming my S&W model 49 serial number 9J9XXX would be around 1971-1972? Thanks for any help!

Just found this great site and looking for any help. My father passed and left me my grandfathers service revolver. From what I can gather it is .357 magnum. The barrel seems short and it has a 6 bullet capacity and the only numbers on it are S 1566XX. Any and all info would be great. My wife is insisting I get rid of it. Looks like a lock box is in my future.

Amish Hitman (love that screen name!): Your gun dates from 1956, just before S&W started assigning model numbers to their revolvers. It's either a .357 Magnum Model of 1950 (pre-Model 27) or a Highway Patrolman (pre-Model 28). The former will have a high-polish blue finish while the latter, the more utilitarian version of the same gun, will be more of a satin blue. There are other finish detail differences such as a lack of serrations on the barrel rib on the M28.

According to SCSW, the features listed as corresponding to product code 103591 included "SG" which means "synthetic grips," so apparently not.

pinned 5" bbl w/ fixed half moon
square butt, single line "Made in U.S.A."

It has a 5 digit number above and on the crane as well. What does this mean? Thank you!
