wsm 270 or 7mm wsm

money wise is wsm 270 better than 270 cal or wsm 7mm it looks like shell is shorter how can it be that faster with less powder

Were the cartridges loaded? I think the WSM either .270 or 7mm has the same capacity. I could be wrong but if the cartridges are loaded that you saw it was probably just a difference in bullets. If the 7mm was a 140 grain and the .270 a 130 the 7mm would be a little longer. This would make the .270 probably a little faster as well.

The 7mm WSM is made like .045" longer to prevent it being chambered in a .270WSM. Therefore the 7WSM has slightly more capacity than the other WSM's. It has a shorter neck too.

If what you're asking is "which makes more sense", then the 270 WSM fills a niche that no other cartridge does. The 7 WSM is so close to what the 7mm Remington magnum does, that there's nothing special about it.

As for how it manages to do what it does with smaller powder charges, it is simply loaded to higher pressure than the same belted magnum. The short-fat powder column is also more efficient than a long thin column.
