Recommend a "Red Dot" for HD firearm...

namely, my M1 Carbine?

Something that can be sighted in and turn-off for long period.

Mounts using Weaver mounts / base [336mount rail]

This allows me to get my Weaver 1.5X back to the shotgun where it belong.

Might want to put your desired price range up.
$30 will buy you a cheap BSA that mounts to a Weaver base. It might work, might not, but it will be cheap.
$500 will buy you an Aimpoint that mounts to a Weaver base. It will very likely work extremely well, but will cost $$$.
Lots of options in between.
