Facts about Hevi-Duty #4buck

Facts about Hevi-Duty #4buck

This is a home defense offering from Hevi Shot. Supposed to be heavier than lead yet frangible.
The facts are it is lighter than steel and very anemic. Having only 0.812 oz of shot at 1250FPS with each pellet weighing less than 12gr. Or a Size “t”(0.20) shot in lead. Since Energy = Mass * Velocity^2 and this load has neither I would say that this would not even be a good goose load unless the goose was right up on you and didn’t have his jacket on. The pellets did fragment on impact just like advertised. They do have very low recoil and there is a cool picture of a “operator” on the box. They had very little penetration and any thing tougher than water caused fragmentation on impact. After testing them I have to say I think this one is a gimmick, So my humble opinion is save your self $1.50 per shot and go with any thing else.

Here is my math if you wish to argue my point

#4 buck is 0.24 in diameter for a total volume (4/3 Pi R^3) of 0.007238” or 0.11861 cc

Density of Steel is 8.8ish grams·cm^3 or 135.80ish grains per cm^3 depending on alloy.
Density of lead is 11.34 grams·cm^3 or 175.0 grains per cm^3.
Density of Tungsten is 19.25 grams·cm^3 or 297.074 grains per cm^3.

1 Pellet of #4buck in HeviMetal weighs 11.849gr.
30 pellets of HeviMetal weigh 355.468gr or 0.8125 oz

1Pellet of #4buck in Steel weighs (0.11861*135.8) 16.107grains
30 pellets steel weigh 483.21gr or 1.10448oz

1Pellet of #4buck in Lead weighs (0.11861*175.0) 20.757grains
30 Pellets of Lead weigh 622.71gr or 1.423 oz

1Pellet of #4buck in Tungsten weighs (0.11861*297.074) 35.236 grains
30 Pellets of Tungsten weigh 1057.08gr or 2.416 oz

1 gram = 15.4324grains, 1oz = 437.5 grains
