Stupid question about a BAR

Background: I picked it up used, from a co-worker, a couple years ago. Thought about selling it, had it listed for a few days, changed my mind.

Anyway, it's a 1981 vintage BAR in 7mm Mag.

Here's the stupid question: The stock on this is very smooth and light feeling. It looks like a very nice wood, but it also feels thin and sounds hollow. I'd almost think it's plastic, with a thick lacquer coat, instead of wood. But I've never heard of a 1981 hunting rifle with plastic stocks that looked like wood, and haven't been able to figure out the magic Google search phrase to find out what Browning used for stock materials on the BAR in 1981

Does anybody know?

Thanks,

M

Take off the butt plate and have a look? Should be easy to tell then, I'd think

You are very perceptive. BAR stocks are indeed hollowed out (not completely hollow), and they have a fairly short drawbolt through the wrist area to hold the stock onto the receiver. The finish is a catalyzed polyurethane finish, and is very hard. Looks like plastic, feels like plastic, but it's real wood underneath.

Fell lucky that you got yours privately - BAR's, bought at retail, have stocks made of laminated C-notes, dipped in wood camo & clear-coated.
