Best scope for 30-06
Well, I, going to get a Ruger American chambered in 30-06. What is the most durable, rugged, and reliable scope under 200 bucks?

It isn't less than $200 but for $230 the Leupold VX-1 3-9X40 is what I'd choose. It is basically the same as the old VX-II scope which was a $300+ and a much better scope than anything else you listed. Plus with the VX-1 you can send it in for a reticle or turrent upgrade to the custom shop later on if you want. I bought the VX-1 for my daughter's rifle and must say I'm quite impressed with it.

Of the scopes you mentioned I would go with the Burris.

If you're not opposed to fixed power scopes take a look at the weaver classic K's a lot of scope for the money IMO.

I also would reflect Taylorce1's view, but since you didn't list it I'd go Vortex, but I would also step up to 4-12x40.....

Nikons are nice. I would also spring for a bit more scope and go with the Leopold

Another vote for leupold vx-1 3x9. I have 2 of them. They are outstanding scopes in my opinion. Spend the extra $30

I am a big believer in Nikon and have been very impressed with my Monarchs.
My buddy has a Pro Staff on his 30.06 and it has held up pretty well and holds zero.

I'd imagine the test might turn out a little different if ran again with the updated versions of the scopes tested.

OK, well beyond your price point, but the Zenith Conquest 3-9x40 is a very good scope. Save up a little and get it. Equal to or better than Leupold VXIII.

In that price range, don't waste budget dollars on variable power. Go with the Bushnell elite tactical 10x40 (ET1040). excellent glass, mil dot reticle, large target knobs with a firm click. Highly recommend. --Jerry

I'm not going any higher than 200. I'm not gettin a conquest. Lol too much. I'm 15 and I'm gonna work all summer by mowin, cleaning gutters, chop wood.. That stuff. I've seen that review and I really love the redfield, but on the review it said when going from 3 zoom to 9vzoom, it was off two inches. That worries me.

I voted for the Burris FFII since I have one on my 30-06. Its been a solid scope and has been on my rifle for 5yrs. Its a good scope for the money in my opinion.

Cody stay away from that Redfield, my son has one, and it's not half the scope that the Vortex Diamondback is, I think you can get one delivered for 200.00.
I have used plenty of different scopes over the years, and one in your price range is kinda hard to choose because there are so many choices. I'm giving you the heads up, if you can afford then the VXI Leupold is the scope,(mow two more yards) but Look into the Vortex, you can upgrade power to 4-12x40, mine sets on a Savage 110 .270 win, and I love it, it's bright, clear, the adjustments are repeatable, and when mounted properly it stays zeroed! Good luck with whatever you choose cody21 dude.

I had a Burris FFII for a while. It was OK, but not great. Plus, the rotating eyepiece makes it impractical to use flip-up scope covers.
The best scope I now own (for the price) is the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9. It has the weatherguard lens coating that prevents it from fogging. Best of all, I got it for $199 when Cabelas was closing them out. It's a shame that Bushnell discontinued that model. However, there are still new-in-box elites out there to be had at a very good price. |

I've had good luck with the Redfield. The good thing about them is they are a "Leupold". They're made in the same factory in Oregon, Leupold bought Redfield a few years ago. So you are getting a good quality scope with great customer service made in Oregon.

My .30-06 currently wears a Nikon ProStaff. I picked it up when another scope went South and I'm pleased with it. My son has a Redfield Revolution that he really likes, and we use Weavers and Leupold's as well. Under $200 there is a lot of scopes to choose from.

In 3x9, I have a Diamondback, a Vortex Viper and a Zeiss Conquest w/RapidZ reticle. The Diamondback has the widest field of view, which is a very good thing. The Zeiss is a better better scope but not strikingly so. The Diamondback will keep you going for several years before you outgrow it, if ever.

Good suggestions made. But you can get a Nitrex tr1 in power range you want at WWW.Natchezss.com for around $120 plus shipping. It is basically a Weaver Grand Slam scope, same internals and optics, made in same Japanese plant and warranty handled by Weaver. It would sell for $240-280 if Grand Slam was on it.

I have the Revolution and the Diamondback. I think they are pretty close. Edge clarity on the diamondback at low power is my only gripe about it. Dont really have a gripe about the Redfield, its just an average scope. The Redfield Revenge is about as optically crisp as my truck winshield after I have been mud riding. The Revenge is extremely sub-par to the Revolution. Burris customer service ticked me off a few years ago and I am finished with them. I had a signature that would not group and they insisted nothing was wrong with it. They eventually fixed it after I sent it back enough times. I wont buy a Weaver because you have to keep up with the receipt. I have a Weaver now that I cant get fixed because I cant find the receipt. Prostaff in my opinion is optically equal to the revolution and Diamondback, but mechanically sub-par to both them.
