Took the Dragunov to the range

Started to get the scope dialed in @100. Only went through 40 rounds but its a start. I need a new bipod for it. The legs kick out towards the front from the recoil. I've shot 30-30 and .308 before. This thing kicks and is loud, love it A little more than .308 but manageable. Would love to hunt Elk with it some day.

That's not a Dragunov. What is it?

Spacing between trigger guard and mag/mag releas says it is not a PSL, might be a Daragunov in a custom stock.

That's a Tiger, which we knocked about in another post. Dandy and rare rifle. I'll let the OP tell you more.

Aaron, what ammo you using? What group size you getting?

Was going to ask what kind of rifle this was (since it's clearly not a Dragunov), but I see that's already been answered.

The thread in the link below is a discussion about the initial acquisition of the rifle including it's conclusive identification as a Dragunov.

Once again, congrats on the rifle. Did you find out anything more about that crosshair illuminator?

I need to order some ammo online, prices aren't too bad. I could only find it at Gander Mountain here in town. $12.99 for 20 Brown Bear 174 grain. Pricey but I wanted to shoot this thing. 10 inch target @100 yard, was getting an average of 3 of of 5 in the black. Hit right next to bullseye a total of three times. Right now, aiming lower left on the target so it does need some more adjustment. Its probably best to stay away from corrosive ammo correct? I find it odd that you have to take the safety off to load a round. Trigger is smooth but has some poundage on it, not sure what the trigger pull is. Only shot from the bench, kinda heavy to hold, well, compared to my 15-22 at least. Would love to take it hunting, Double Tap has some cool looking ammo. Oh, when cleaning, how often does the gas block/piston and that stuff have to be cleaned?

From what I've learned on here and doing some research, I found out these were only imported in 1993. These were imported into the US from the Izhmach factory in Russia to three companies in the US. Big Bear Arms, B-West (what this one is), and Century Arms International.
Lots of info here http://www.dragunov.net/tiger.html

This gun is the Tiger Dragunov which is based off the SVD Dragunov Sniper Rifle. The Tiger was sold in the US as a medium to large game hunting rifle. The main differences are that the SVD has a 24inch barrel, the Tiger has a 20. The SVD has a 1,000 meter iron sight, the Tiger has a 300 meter iron sight. The Tiger came with a wood thumbhole stock and composite hand guard. The older SVD's were all wood and the new ones are all composite. Besides that, they are the same gun. The Tiger even comes with the same Russian Millitary Sniper Scope that the SVD uses. Mine is the PSO-1M2. There is the PSO-1 and POSP and some others. The SVD comes with a 10 round mag, Tiger has 5.

But the cool thing is, you can get all the SVD parts for the Tiger. Expensive and hard to find but cool. I think you can even get the 24 inch barrel. I'm keeping the stock barrel. I eventually plan on getting the SVD wood stock set, SVD flash hider, 10 round mags and the 1,000 meter iron sight.

That's a sweet rifle!

I think I'd have to get a Dragunov stock just for the hell of it.

on

I'd say your on. Now you can adjust the drums for windage and elevation so that you take full advantage of the range finder. Uh???.......you've found that right?

Again......nice rig.

Thanks. The range finder is pretty cool. I need to find a range that is longer than 100 yards. I'm suprized these scopes are only 4X. Can't imagine trying to hold on target at 200 yards. I ordered the battery adapter, battery and green led for the scope

Neat rifle. I cannot be certain looking at your target, but are the little teensy screws on the windage and elevation drums nice and snug? Is the clamp properly set up to snug the scope to the rifle's rail?

That second target sort of looks to me like maybe you have 4 distinct groupings, which suggests maybe the aiming reference is shifting.

Like I said, I cannot be certain.

Enjoy!

Also Aaron, I have found that if you do the six o'clock hold where the aiming carat is just under the black bullseye, you can set the elevation turret to whatever point to walk the rounds to the center of the bullseye.

In use on other than black bullseye's, the carats on the reticle become more instinctive in use.

carats, carrots, and chevrons

The peculiar POSP aiming point is normally called a chevron.

Try shooting at a paper plate. A 9-10 inch white paper plate is pretty easily seen at 4x, way out there.

Old school hunters will tell you 4x is the sweet spot for a fixed power scope. It is also cheaper and faster to build a rugged, high quality fixed than it is a rugged, high quality variable so that is why the Soviets opted for it. When you keep in mind the thing's effective range, Soviet doctrine on who it was issued to and that man's role in the rifle squad it's not surprising at all they opted for a four power fixed.

So its probably silly that I have a 4-16x50 scope on my 10-22? I need to work on my aim and be steadier. And I need to work on my trigger pull.
