148 dewc in 357 mag

A freind of mine is just getting started in reloading and wonders about why he can't find any data for 148 gr dewc in 357. It's in the 38 spec section but not the magnum. He wants to use 357 cases and my advice was there should be no problem just taking the 38 data and applying it to the magnum cases. Right or wrong? Is the case volume difference a factor? Thanks.

Case volume being greater *can* lead to occasional poppers that don't quite get the bullet out, especially with longer barrels and minimum loads.

I'd start no lower than the middle of the load range, and chrono them. Anything giving similar speeds in the same barrel as the loading manual is quite unlikely to squib out on you...unless your friend wants to hot-rod the things...

When I am trying to get 38 Special velocities with 357 Magnum cases, I just take the data for the 38 loads and add 0.5 grains. This usually gets me very close to matching 38 velocity.

I tend to start with 38+P loads. Found 3.2gr of Bullseye behind a 148gr HBWC works very nicely (600fps or so) for close range shooting.

ymmv, usual disclaimer...etc..

If they still have any for sale, Midway's LoadMAP for .357 has wadcutter data. If you don't want to buy one I could post some data when I get home...

Thanks for all the replies. I think I actually have a load map for 38/357 but forgot about it. I've moved and there is a LOT of stuff still in boxes.
