Three (one of each: pump, semi & O/U) is enough shotguns for me but then again I'm not much of a shotgunner.
1) Mossberg 500 12ga (HD/hunting) 2) Remington 1100 (trap) 3) Mossberg Silver Reserve (hunting) |

See I don't presently own a double in any configuration.
One autoloader (11-87), one break/single (HR .410) and the rest are 12 ga pumps in some configuration or another (3 870's, 1 Rem 31, 1 M500, 1M835)

Need one, have two (bought so a friend could come and shoot with me): one 870 in 20 gauge, which came first and is the one I shoot the most -- it fits, it does what I want it to do -- one Moss. 500 youth model, 12 gauge (I mean, a person's gotta have a 12 gauge, right? and it fits my friend better than the full-size 870)...
Want... oh, Jeez. I want them all, but that's not going to happen in this lifetime. Does -- I forget the manufacturer right now -- still make that lever-gun .410 they came out with a few years ago? Now there's one that's sort of pointless, but it looks nifty, and it'd be fun to tote around, I think. |

One Moss 500 or 870 per person is enough. THe question is how many barrels and how many chokes.
Any more than one is just convenient. |

I have 2 and could easily find reason for more.
I have a remington 1100 special field 20 guage, for upland hunting. I have a baikal 3 1/2 "12 guage auto for ducks and geese. You can see all the activities I have left uncovered. |

I'd take a a 12 gauge 3" chambers semi 26" barrel with extended choke tubes so the barrel would become more like 27" Remington 1100 perhaps? but I really like Benelli M2 feild. Also going to look at Berreta's as their nice guns to.

Rough Estimate
I took out the old slide ruler, calculator, and a pad of paper and pencil. It took me several hours but I think I have figured out how many shotguns I need. I need 843 of them. Of course, this is just an estimation.

A man need one shotgun that shoots everything from 2 3/4 - 3/12 inch magnum, to include steel shots with appropriate choke tube. This shotgun would be effective for home defense, deer, turkey, duck, and geese. That shotgun would be a Russian Baikal Mp-153.

A pump in 12 and 20
A semi auto in 12 and 20 An Over/Under in 12 and 20 A single shot in .410 and one with an 18" barrel and 8 round mag for defense. So 8 should be about right. |

The "when you run out of room" is invalid answer. That only means it is time to add an addition to the house. For more gun safes of course! Shotguns are to me what stray kittens are to the wife, they just keep following me home!

Well, I for one don't believe in buying guns just for the heck of it. Of course we are all entitled to own "cool" or "dream" guns.
I've had the same Mossberg 500a since I was 12. 19 now and I seen no reason to replace it anytime soon. I think in the future though my girlfriend would need one for her own use. Of course her being the type of girl she is, she would most likely buy it herself. Not quite sure about what to do about my son yet as far as shotguns go. He's almost 3 so obviously too young for ANY gun, but in the future when he's old enough I'm not sure if I should just have him use my Mossberg or maybe get them youth model Remington 870 20 gauges. Oh well I got plenty of time. But yeah, I don't see the need to own a ton of shotguns. Although I do admit that nearly a year ago I saw a really cool looking coach gun that I kind of wanted, but got sold eventually. |

Since I dont hunt and mainly keep a shotgun around for HD or range time, I see no need for more than 2 or 3 at best. One primary, one "back-up" and possibly one more "just because."

I have two, and both are single shots.
Never needed anything else. I get just as many (sometimes more) critters as anyone else I hunt with, and burn up less ammo. Daryl |

Gun mags were sure hyping the brand new 590 so I bought one of the first ones out.
I decided it was slightly nose heavy so I bought a 500 with an 18 inch barrel. Then the new 9200 turkey gun looked cool because I thought I might go turkey hunting some day, so I bought one. Hmmm NEF single at garage sale for 35 buck---why not. 9200 18incher on gunbroker- won that for $175.00 --how can you pass that up. Sure buddy I'll swap you your nib 935 super mag for my old P89 ruger. I was thinking about some goose hunting anyway. Beretta 1201fp ---winning bid $350.00--didn't think i'd win that one. 930 spx--rare as hens teeth. Dicks had them on sale for $535.00 why not . I almost never go shotgun shopping, they seek me out.

That is like asking "How long is a piece of string"
For some zero is the proper number for others there can never be enough. I fall into the latter. |

There used to be a barrel manufacturer in Montana that used stock rejects and barrel rejects (alternating) as posts for his fence around the corporate office. When I reach the point of using firearm parts as building materials... I reckon it will be time to re-think the issue.
I gave my modern shotguns to my sons. The others are mine until they progress beyond the trading or bartering stage. I've found that hanging on to firearms and getting others is much preferable to 'one in, one out'. Thankfully I've got a wife who shares these sentiments. Pawn shops are anathema... unless it is to facilitate the filling in of gun safes. |
