Anyone here tried loading their own snakeshot?

This is an idle question. I buy the stuff for use on the farm, but never thought about trying to load my own. How would you press in the plastic dome? How would you keep the shot in the dome to load them? Questions, questions. Thanks for your input.

Speer sells plastic capsules for shot shells in handgun calibers.

Unlike the commercial ones they are just a plastic cylinder with a plastic cap for one end.

I load the 44 and 357 capsules with #9 shot for the carry pistols. Expect range of about 8-10 feet max or the holes in the patterns are large enough for most snakes to run thru. It does not make a pistol into a shotgun. A cheap single shot shotgun is a far better choice.

To answer, yes, I load Speer capsules with # 7 1/2 shot for snake loads to use in my .44 mag. Ruger Redhawk. Very effective. When I had my farm I carried with two shot loads as the first up, bullets after that.

Been loading them for years, don't plan to quit. My tacklebox gun is a mod 36, 2" and it's mojo magic death to critters out to about 7 or 8'. Receipe is on the box, stick to it....

I used to load them for .357 mag and .44 mag ....but it isn't worth it ...

I'd be surprised if you shoot more than a dozen of them a yr....

cut ya some cards from cereal boxes. I drill out the primer then notch the mouth , spin it with a lee trimmer holder , cut 5-6 at the time & punch em out.

some fast powder, varies with caliber, a card ,then tamp it down.

add shot #9 or#10 , the bigger shot will work but patterns will be sparser.

another card , then a slight roll crimp & seal it with waterproff carpenters glue.

Let it dry completely before firing .

PS if ya shoot at hard surfaces such as wood or plywood some shot WILL bounce back.

A qwik shot source is cheap shells from china-mart.

& they work !!!!!!!!

Tried them. They suck after 10ft. I use my trusty 215 or 240gr SWC in 41 or 44 persuasion under 8gr. of Unique. One pop and the head is history.

I had a 44 mag load with 2 gas checks and some #11 shot. Shot a quail outa the air. No sure what killed the quail. Shot snakes as well, close-up, could have been the powder blast that killed em. They werew close

I load them for the .38/.357 and the .45 Colt. I usually use 7 1/2 shot, sometimes #9.

Speer Capsule work very well and inside their plastic boxes of shot cups, they have a little recipe card with different loads.

I use them when working around the barn and if I am fishing. If I can not get away safely from a snake, it dies.

We also use them to shoot balloons.

If you use the Speer shot capsules, I highly recommend using Speer data. (It used to come in the boxes, but was not in the last box of .35 caliber capsules I bought.) Speer reloading manual #14 (most recent) has data for popular cartridges, in the calibers they make capsules for.

I have for 38/357,44,45LC and 45ACP over the years. The speer shot cups are easy if you are using revolvers for 45 you have to make your own brass and get "blank" forming dies, a lot of work.

Nothing wrong with a hoe, heck I have even used the tires on the tractor I was driving to take snakes, the only problem is I don't always carry a tractor or hoe. Thus my use of snake shot.

Like this guy I caught trying to get down this catfish, he would have been done and gone if I had to go get anything.

That stuff is WAY to expensive to buy.
As soon as I found the capsuls I started loading my own.
I do 38's, 44's, 45 colt with 9 shot.
It's good on rattlers and does work excellent on growling dogs at 12 feet.
It shut him up right now and he was heading home at 90mph.

I just realized I never answered the last part of your question.

1. How would you press in the plastic dome?

I use my single stage press. Of course you go easy, but I get them in with-out incident. My neighbor loads his with a Lee Hand Press.

They loaded like any other projectile.

2. How would you keep the shot in the dome to load them?

The capsule comes with a plastic base that is snaps into place once the shot is loaded.

I bought some and I think I was five plastic bases short. I called Speer and they sent me a whole new box of shot capsules.

I loaded no. 9 shot in the Speer Empty Shot Capsules for my .38 Put as much shot as I could in the capsule and put the little plastic plug on. I remember that I was real gentle when I pressed the plastic capsule into the case. Pretty good snake medicine out to about ten feet or so. Speer recommends 5.5 grs. of Unique with the #9 shot. I can't remember how much powder (Unique) I used since it was years ago when I loaded about 50 rounds.
