1911's are plentiful,,,

Quote:
Is the Colt 1911 a fairly hard to find discontinued gun?
Nope,,,
Colt still makes them.

Also, since the exclusive patent expired many years ago,,,
There are several (read many) companies making the 1911 pistol.

Colt, Ruger, Springfield Armory, Remington, Kimber, and many many others,,,
The quality ranges from superb to dismal.

I personally am not knowledgable enough to tell you what are the good ones,,,
But there are many 1911 aficionados here who can steer you towards quality pistols.

I'm not fond of them myself,,,
I don't want a single-action pistol,,,
I much prefer the DA/SA of my CZ-75B.

Remember though,,,
That's just my personal opinion of the gun,,,
Many thousands upon thousands of folk carry 1911's and adore them.

Thanks again Aarond. I will check out the CZ too. If Colt prices are like they were when I got one in the early 90's then that make is going to be out of my price range at this time.
Didn't know that CZ had a .22 caliber gun. I will check out their website.

Have a great weekend.

Yea, wish I had budget for the Sig Classic too, that is really da bomb! (but that's my CZ75 compact money ... that I'm still saving for). I have a 22A and 2 NEOS and my sons have a Buckmark and a Ruger. They're all nice guns, really nice, but none of them feel like a duty pistol. They all feel like target pistols (hmmm, go figure since that's what they are). I was leaning towards the M&P 22 and I think the discussion here has pushed me over to that side. I should have posted this last time but here's a pretty good link I had found on it.

Here's the internals ...

I haven't seen the Ruger SR22 yet. I was wondering if the Ruger feels a little more substantial than the Walther .22
So far sounds like the M&P is my best bet. Would like the Sig Classic but it is likely to be more than I am prepared to spend in the near future.

The Ruger and Walther are very much the same size but I find the Ruger to appear better built as well as having a true hammer drop safety.

I used to own a Walther P22 but have never fired a Ruger SR22 although I've handled several.

I have been giving this a lot more thought.
IF I can get any of the following at a price I can tolerate (400.00 about tops), excellent used I might do it. Any of these either not good in reputation or simply way above my price range?

GSG 1911 22
CZ 75B Kadet
Rock Island Armory 1911 XT 22 462.00 Cheaper Than Dirt
Sig Sauer 1911-22 369.00 CTD
Sig P226 Classic 22
S&W M&P

Still want as close as possible to full size,

Thanks again everyone.

I recently shot the P22, SR22, and M&P22 back to back. The P22 and SR22 are not full size guns. The M&P22 is. The grip is exactly the same size as a full size centerfire M&P with the medium grip insert. The differenyes are a bit less weight, a better trigger, and a 4.1" barrel instead of 4.25". The M&P22 will definitely be my next handgun and it seems very accurate to me. I was indoors with the kids so the target was only at 7.5 yards iirc, but the first 6 shots went into the same hole shooting freehand with Winchester bulk ammo.

Have had a Mosquito for a couple years

and once I got about a 1000 rounds through it, it will fire any ammo quite well.

About a year ago I purchased a Ruger MK III 22/45. The grip exactly mimics my Kimber Compact II in .45 acp and shoots like a dream. The Ruger feels more like my Kimber than the Mosquito.

Bought my wife a one of the new Browning 1911-22 a couple months ago. They are about 75% scale of a full size 1911. For that reason, I'm not that fond of it (smaller size feels like a toy to me) but the wife loves it
It is a great shooter and she's having a ball shooting with me.
