IMR Powder for .223 55grain
I usually use H335 for reloading .223. My local gun shop doesn't have any in stock, so I'm coming up with alternatives. I haven't tryed any IMR powders yet. I was wanting peoples opinions on which IMR power to reload .233 55 grain with. So what IMR powder would buy?

Hodgon's load data site is the best place to find IMR load data, as distribute the powder and develop their loads with reference lots of powder that are truly averag. They are here:

I managed to score an 8 lb keg of IMR-8208 XBR for loading 223's. So far, with 55 grain bullets, its working out great. I've also got some 50 grain hollowpoints to try out with it, as well.

hodgdon's new CFE 223 (copper fouling eraser) will also work great.

-1 for me with the imr4064. I tested it, worked but not consistent with a cci 400 primer. Never tried the cci41's but found a nice load with h335 and I'm stickin with it. If I could take shot at it I would use the benchmark, burn rates are next to each other.

223 using IMR/H 4198
Steve, I have used IMR 4198 as a standard 223 powder with 55 grain bullet. I always thought the H4198 was very similar. My charge of IMR 4198 has been 21 grains and have had no cycling problems. I have had bad extractions on a rifle that was very dirty..... my fault for not cleaning it like I should....
Good cleaning corrected that. What was the load on your IMR4198 and the H4198? Lemmon from Rural South Carolina |

I use IMR3031 in .223. Very good results with only 22.5 grains under a 55FMJBT.

Ironic because I couldn't find my favorite IMR 4895 so I switched to H335. Have since found a source for both but am going to stick with H335 if the accuracy is good simply because it meters so nicely. However 4895 has been very accurate for me, also hear good thing about 4320.

I have also used Reloader 10x, IMR 4320, and BLC-2.
H335 has worked really well for me and is what I use when available. |

4064 is m fav .223 powder, but only because I load the heavyweights, 70-80gr. I wouldn't think it would work too well with the lighter bullets like your wanting to use.

I load a compressed charge of IMR4320 topped off with a Sierra 55gr game king hollow point bullet.
My rifle is a Savage with a 20 inch heavy barrel, it consistently shoots groups of 5/16 of an inch at 100 yards with the above load. Best Regards Bob Hunter |

The .223 is not real picky that's one good thing about it. I have had excellent results with BLC-2, Benchmark, Varget, 3031, with 55gr V-Max's, Sierra HPBT's, Nosler FBHP's, and Dogtown FBHP's. For my 1-12" rifle 3031 is my go to load and it does a pretty good job in my 1-9" but Benchmark, and BLC-2 are my go to loads for my 1-9" but all 4 of these powder's shoot under 1" in my rifles.

~ 15 years ago I was at a 200 yard range with Ruger #1 223 55 gr Vmax and some loaded with H335 and some with IMR4895.
The 335 groups were higher on the target, but larger groups. The 4895 groups were lower on the target, but smaller groups.

My experience, too.
I like the way Ball powder meters, but extruded is usually at least a little more accurate... in MY rifles. |
