500 s&w lead

I'm looking for 500 s&w bullets, also 40 s&w and 38/357. I'm new to reloading and looking for some good sources. I'm looking for 275-700gr in the 500 bullets.

big bullets

Loaded ammo. Not cheap but no 500 S&W ammo is.
700 grain bullets at 1200 fps.

Bullets only:

The old "Tyrannosaur Thumper" 700 grainers that Rick Gibson (Ranger Rick) used to sell are available here.

Why are some bullets .500 and some are .501?

Lead bullets are typically 0.001 larger in diameter than jacketed to ensure a good seal with barrel tolerance.

If your shooting the 500SW X-Frame, you might want to slug your barrel and measure your cylinder throats, as some throats are tight and have 0.502 bores. If that's the case, you would want to ream your throats to 0.501 or 0.5015 and shoot 0.502 sized cast bullets.

My Smith had 0.4985 throats and 0.5015 bore.

Huh??¿ How do you DECREASE an inside diameter by reaming? I'd like to see that trick!

Mr. DP, you should start casting your own. Then you get to shoot boolits like these;

The above 2 pics are the 700 grain grand canyon .501 boolit for the 500 smith. It's a special order "group buy" from over at castboolits.com. Getting your own casting outfit will allow you to get special bullets like this and others.

There's a 440 50 cal in there somewhere.

Snuffy, you may have misread my post. If the cylinder throats are tight, like in 0.4985, you may want to ream them to 0.501 or larger. Would you agree with that?

I experienced brain freeze when suggesting shooting a 0.502" bullet with 0.5015 cylinder throats - make that a 0.501 bullet from a 0.5015 cylinder throat.

Those are some nice looking cast bullets you have there. 700 grainers will definately keep the rabbits out of the wife's flower garden.

I'd like to cast my own but since I haven't reloaded my first cartridge yet I'll probably get good at that first.

My gun is a S&W 500 but I'm not sure how to slug the barrel.

This may help a little:

http://lbtmoulds.com/support/instslugs.pdf

http://www.alphaprecisioninc.com/revolver/default.htm

Use pin gauges to measure your cylinder throats, if you don't have them or access to them you can use a 50 caliber jacketed bullet, such as the 500 grain Hornady. It should slid through each charge hole with little to no finger pressure, as it will be exactly 0.500" in diameter. (Don't try to ram it through, as you'll find that will present a problem.) If it doesn't drop through or go through with a little finger pressure your throats might be a little tight.

As far as the bore, send me an e-mail and I'll get a couple slugs headed your way that will work very well, providing you have access to a decent micrometer.
