I have an old USPS Flat Rate box (medium, I think), that I use as a scale cover.

I use a folded over lengthwise kitchen towel draped over it. Sits on a shelf above the bench. This is my second one, 20+ years of dust made the other one erratic and me trying to disassemble it and clean it made it even worse. RCBS replaced it for free when I sent it in for just a cleaning and calibration. I'll keep the newer one covered now.

Yeah, dust is ultimately destructive in a scale. Mostly it's comprised of dead skin cells, but there are mites that eat them and secret waste products that can promote damage to metal parts. Slow process, but can happen.
I use plastic bags. A 2 gallon freezer bag just slips over most with no problem. My mother had an old aluminum bread box that had a front door that opened up and back and stayed in place like a garage door. It was about 2 loaves high an 1½ wide and would have been perfect. It would have needed a light installed, but it would have acted as a draft shield on four sides and could have been grounded to work as a static shield, as well. It would have been good for either digital or mechanical scales from that standpoint. Wish I had it.
