Do max 9mm loads in the manuals equal +p?

I have been loading .40 S&W for a while and am going to get started with the 9x19. I have been looking at the different loads in the powder manufacturers' manuals and have noticed that the +P defensive loads on the market have similar ballistics (as advertized) to the published max load ballistics in the VihtaVuori and Alliant catalogs. Are these max loads in the manuals actually over pressure (+P) loads? I looked at the SAAMI web site and couldn't find any actual standards ... whilie we're at it, what pressure constitutes MAX, +P and +P+?

A specific "near-max" load CAN BE +P in your gun, so start lower than max and work up slow. If you've reached the maximum published load just stop. Until you have more measuring tools at your disposal (like a chrono) there's no point pushing the limit.

+P means +10% pressure.
+P+ means +20% pressure.

SAAMI max for 9mm is 35,000 psi
+P would then be 38,500 psi
and +P+ would then be 42,000 psi

Hertenberger 9mm +P+ will do 1275 fps 100 gr out of a 3" barrel.

All the load books I have seen only give SAMMI max for 9mm.

As a rule of thumb a 10% increase in powder gives a 20% increase in pressure.

I have done this with 4 bullet wieghts and 10 gun powders. Power Pistol is the loudest and kicks the hardest.

I was going to start a new post but I'll just ask my questions here. First, I am currently loading .45ACP and love it. I may want to get into loading 9mm next. Is it possible to load a 147gr bullet to go 1100fps (approx 395ft/lbs)? Would I need to use new +P brass? I just have a craving to shoot fast heavy 9mm rounds in my Glock and Tanfoglio.

My alliant load table says that you can load a 147 XTP with PowerPistol (if you can find it where you are) to 1095 fps without going over max ... not 1100, but probably close enough

Thanks for the input. I've got plenty of 9x19 brass I just need to get my dies, bullets etc...

I started loading .45ACP about 9 months ago...loads of fun! Ha Ha! I use Universal Clays and it seems to burn real clean and consistent. I'm using a Lee Anniversary Press kit.

I wonder why ammo manufacturers don't load 147 +P loads for the 9mm? For .45ACP they load 230gr JHP to +P and I've never had a problem with those in my pistols. Oh well, just wondering.
