Silicon-Carbide? Improves accuracy?

One of the guys at my local store said that he used some silicon carbide, smeared some on the bullet head, and ran a few rounds through his rifle (SKS) and the rifling got sharpened up quite a bit, and his groups went from about 5" @ 100 yards (standard minute of pieplate for SKS's) to less then 3"...

My Mauser in 308 is not very accurate, and I was wondering if this was an option... My M1A with big barrel, does 1.5" standing with iron sights, but my Mauser with the V sights even on bags, don't do any better then 3"... I'm wondering if this will help, or if it's a "barrel quality limit" I've hit already that I can't really do anything about..

I figure since I have an SKS as well, I might give silicon carbide a try if it does what my store guy claims..

Any comments would be appreciated..

Really good barrel...
Make it worse in a heartbeat.

Really bad barrel...

Its called fire laping, kits are out there just for this, I,ve never done it so can,t say how good, or bad it is.

Jeeze, Al! Don't just take silicon carbide and rub on the bullets! There are entire books written on fire lapping and specific procedures to follow.

Besides how do you know its the bore and not the bedding job or trigger or lock or headspace or throat or bolt fit? Last year I had a rifle that was shooting 4 inch groups and it turned out to have a split stock.

Meek! Don't worry! I wasn't just going to smear some on the bullet and let her fly! I just asked!!

I wanted to get as much info as I can on my options of improving accuracy...

Any suggestions on what else I should read up on??
