.38 special working load
I have got some Hornady 125 xtp's and want some advice for a good working load for a 6" S&W K-38. I have some unique, bullseye, 700X, AA#5, and bluedot. Any favorites? BTW you guys have a great forum here, Thanks.

5 to 5.5 grains of the Unique has always worked well for me.

QuickLOAD suggests that the powders you have
with max charges for each will give velocities that rank in the order:
Blue Dot AA #5 Unique Bullseye (QuickLOAD does not have a file for 700X) Bullseye and Unique burn most completely, according to QuickLOAD. The velocities that QuickLOAD estimates do not include the effect of the cylinder-to-barrel gap, so they are unrealistically high, but I will tell you that the calculated difference between Bullseye and Blue Dot is only 36 fps in a 4" barrel. So, your choices may depend more on things like how accurate each is in YOUR gun, how much muzzle flash you want, and how dirty the cases come out, more than what velocity you get. And remember, these are only calculations, your results may vary. SL1 |
