Larger grips for Colt Police Positive Special

Hi, I have a Colt Police Positive Special with the original grips, serial 259xxx. I have a problem shooting it, since the grips are so small. I wondered if anyone knew of a company that makes a larger size grip for it. It may not be practical, since the frame may prohibit a different size grip. Any suggestions? I'm not planning to permanently replace the original grips, but just switch them when I fire the pistol. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Rich, don't know if this will help, but this is a S&W Hand Ejector, predecessor to the K frame with a pair of Pachmeyer grip adapters on it. It's truly a comfortable gun to shoot, and I think that they add a vintage look as well. Pachmeyer made them for Colts as well and you can find them on Ebay or Gunbroker. In use, you remove the grip panels, and add the adapters...they have thin metal ears that slide under the grip panels, the grip screw provides plenty of "grip" to keep the adapter in place. Best Regards, Rod

Do a search for Colt D frame grips. The PPS was the D frame. You should be able to find a pair that fits your needs.

Getting different grips for your Police Positive Special may be difficult.

259XXX was made in 1922.
These older guns used a long grip frame with a square butt.
Most of todays grip makers only offer grips for the 1965 and later frame that has a short, stubby grip frame under the wood.
These grips overlap on the bottom of the short frame to give a full size grip.
These types will not fit your older model PPS, and most grips that are available for your gun will be replicas of the original, not larger.

Eagle Grips do make walnut grips for your model, but these too are the same size as the original.
Pachmayr, Hogue and most other makers will offer nothing for your gun at all.

About the only choice is to find a custom maker who will make you a true custom grip, or use a grip adapter like rodfac shows above.

Ah I missed the age of the gun here. Yes dfariswheel is completely right. Perhaps a pair for another colt could be modified to fit?

The Pachmayr Presentation grips I linked to specifically list "Long, Square Butt D Frame (older large frame 1940-1971)"

I was gonna tell you I had a Tyler T-Grip that I took off my Diamondback you could buy. Since Dfariswheel said your gun was made in 1922, it will not work. They are made for guns after 1941. You might find something at their website. For your reference since I already had copied this from their site to put in my ad;

"Tyler's T-Grip #5

For Colt "D" frame Round or Square Butt models. Agent, Cobra, Detective Special, Diamondback, Police Positive made after 1941, with standard size grips."

Colt Police Positive grips

Gentlemen, thank you for the advice! I will do some detective work on this and let you know what works. It may be that I just have to grow smaller hands and suck it up. Still a cool gun. I feel like Bogart when I fire it. Or maybe Peter Lorre. Thanks again. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!
