Just so you know . . . it's called "Black Powder Addiction" . . . and there is no cure. Glad it went well for you!

thebeser, what gun do you have? I've shot my Remington 1858 on a few occations now and totally enjoyed it.
I put together a kit from an old fish and tackle box with my cleaning stuff, balls, powder flask etc. I love shooting black powder as well, enjoy your gun and don't be too concerned with getting a new one for now. |

Congrats, now you are hooked. Get a steel framed gun, in fact get several. And throw in a few more brassers and a couple stainless ones as well. Its only a matter of time.......

Reading this thread makes me want to dig through the safe, and find my Lyman 1858 Remington 44 cap & ball revolver. Might just have to pick up some fffg or pyrodex P if I can't find the "real thing".

Isn't the brass ring what you grab on the merry-go-round?

My dad still claims a bp revolver is the most fun he's had shooting as well. Is there alot of maintenance involved apart from cleaning? And do you need a pistol permit to purchase one?

Cleaning isn't hard. You just have to do it within a reasonable period of time. Some say right away, some say within a couple of days. I do it right away so I don't forget. Whether you need a permit depends on your state and local ordinances. There is no federal requirement.

I have a cva brass frame 1860 army. I have shot thousand rounds through it using 25 gr of 3f. It's a 44. Still good to go! Seeing how its just shy of being 30 yrs old, it is semi-retired. Now days i shoot a dragoon.

Chasingwhitetail, I'm from CT as well. You don't need a pistol permit or have to fill out any FFL forms. I bought my 1858 and 1860 on Cabelas website and they were shipped to my door!
I researched this site, as well as others, to determine everything I needed. From Cabelas: 1. Traditions .454 balls 2. Greased wads 3. Remington powder flask (Pedersoli) 4. A can of both 777 and Pyrodex P (both work well for me) 5. I got an assortment of 18 to 40 grain spouts for my flask from Ebay 6. Ballistol 7. There were no Remington #10 caps on Cabelas so I ordered them elsewhere, but can't remember where. edit- Ah, here: http://www.jedediah-starr.com/closeu...d=899&offset=0 |
