The only information I have about the Mossberg 590 I obtained using the search feature on this forum. I am curious what kind of deal I got, since I feel like it was a steal.
A friend recently graduated from basic law enforcement training with this 590 that is 6 months old, and has less than 200 rounds through it. He didn't take care of it at all, and it was covered in surface rust that came off with a little oil and a rag (no pitting). Much to my horror, the boy said he NEVER cleaned it (alledgedly did not know how) and it showed, but 30 nitro-soaked patches later and a little gun-blaster or whatever it's called from wally-world, and the thing looks brand new. 20" barrel with 8+1 capacity speedfeed synthetic stocks ghost ring sights plastic trigger guard/safety He included: 150 rounds Lawman .40 S&W 180 gr FMJ 12 guage soft bore brush Hoppe's Protecto Plastic/Foam Case 15 Remington slugs 20 Remington/Winchester 00 Buck 5 Winchester sabot slugs He sold all that including the shotgun for $200. What do you think? If I wanted to sell this (which I don't) what might I get for the shotgun alone? Where can I get a metal safety? Thanks for your opinions/information. |

A good price might be between $250 to $300 depending on how well the gun "cleaned up." The metal parts are available from Brownells

Well, I bought a brand new parkerized 590 a couple of months ago for $430 ($410 for non-parkerized) in the exact same configuration (except for the Speedfeed stock). So...I would say you got a GREAT deal. Count your lucky stars that your friend was nice enough to part with it for so little money. I guess one man's (surface rusty) junk is another man's treasure.

I set out to build a very similar SG to the one you mentioned, including the speedfeed III straight stock with mag tubes (holds 4 extra rounds), ghost rings, etc. To sum up, the SG itself was $279 at my local sporting goods store, SpeedFeed III from Delta was $89+s/h, sling $20, Choate 'spool' foreend - more comfortable than stock Moss $15. Added up, it's much closer to the cost of 590A1, but without the 8+1 capacity.
You got a steal - hold onto that shotgun! I was willing to go the 'build' route rather than buying an A1 variant, only because I'm willing to sacrifice some mag capacity for lighter weight and shorter barrel (18" v. 20" on the 8+1 models). 5 rounds should be plenty for what I do with it... |
