Haw many types of places prohibit carry?

This is the outer edge of the Memphis TN metro area.
Being in the stages of wanting to buy a first handgun and take the CCW class, mostly to learn handgun basics in a methodical manner, I still won't know for a while whether I'll choose to carry.

But if the decision is made (would be a Sig 232, Bersa or Mak/P-64) , how often do you notice "no weapons allowed" etc on most business entrances?

Can well imagine that all banks as well as movie theaters (these days). How about Walgreens, Kroger, Loews etc?

i was in the same boat when i first took my class. i didn't end up actually submitting my paperwork for almost a year after taking the class.

usually it's restaurants, banks, government buildings, and office buildings. i see very very few grocery stores with the signs. i haven't been to the movie theaters in a couple years, but i carry in those whenever i go.

i assume you are looking at 380 by your gun choices. the bersa is a fantastic (and cheap!) option. a buddy of mine who i took the class with qualified with his bersa 380. the sig p232 is cool looking, but beware of the slide. it sits low and is very sharp. if you have much meat to your hands, it will cut up your hand pretty bad. try to shoot one first if you can.

in a similar size but 9mm caliber, look at the walther pps. its felt recoil is about what the bersa is.

Depends on your state laws. Signs saying carrying of weapons not allowed don't mean squat in my state. Only thing is if you don't leave when asked your trespassing and then I'm sure the city attorney will find a reason to add a weapons charge in too.

No Federal government owned or maintained land or office. Unless hunting grounds. With in 1000 feet of the edge of school property, all education levels college too as well as a license day care. No school functions, all levels college too. State fair, prisons any correctional lock up, police station as well.

You need to do a search for your state. I can carry in bars, hospitals, the bank if not federal, All though I don't! I can drink as long as I can pass the same dwi test a drunk driver takes, but I don't drink.

Federal buildings are the common denomonator. Private owned business can ask but can't enforce it. They can only ask you to leave if they want but that is true for any reason. Unfortunately a lot of places you might actually need to use your concealed weapon is now forbidden to be carried on those premises.
As long as you are discrete and properly have your weapon concealed you shouldn't have any problems. What the general public doesn't know won't hurt them, it's not any of their business if I have a firearm on me anyway.

I would suggest checking work rules, some places it is illegal to carry or have a gun In the vehicle if work rules prohibit weapons on the property.

Your question should be well covered in the class you take. My Prohibited areas, from Local, State, and Federal jurisdictions: "Cop shops" (not specifically stated but common sense dictated), Federal buildings, Post Office, Court House, Military installations, Capital buildings, air/bus/train/truck terminals, any place politicians are, any type of job "action" picket line/union organizing/union meeting etc., Indian Casinos. With Restrictions; Bars, Schools, Terrorist threats, Drinking, drunk and disorderly. I also usually honor the private businesses signs, (especially my bank as it has a metal detector sally port entrance).

I also wanted to add to the list regarding my state. Hospitals, sporting events, and restaurants that 60% (can't rember the exact percentage) of the business is a bar.

I see a couple I forgot, airport casino bus transportation state capital building but the grounds are ok. I would remember them if I were to go there. I can eat at the buffet at the casino I just can't go in the gambling areas. Neither can a minor.

You may be surprised by some particulars.

Examples:

- banks are commonly mistaken to be federal institutions. They aren't. If they don't have prohibitive signs up, some states give you a green light.

- in states like mine, posted signs don't amount to much. If somebody in a prohibitive establishment spots my CCW (side note: won't happen!), all they can do is ask me to leave. If they ask me to leave, and I refuse, then I am trespassing.

When I started carrying, I was surprised that I never needed to disarm. I can carry everywhere I go during the course of normal day-to-day.

1/ Find out what your state laws actually are. Not just what you have heard.
2/ Start looking for the no guns allowed signs every where you go.(if signs at some of your regular store be sure to look at other of the same type to see if they also have the signs)
3/ Decide if you can live with it or if you will find CCW to be more of a hassle than you want to deal with.
4/ Act in accordance with your choice. Should you chose not to CCW there should still be class's out there to learn handgun basic.

As noted, it depends on your state laws. I'd suggest starting here: http://www.handgunlaw.us/

In Arkansas, I almost never see a "no firearms" sign. When I first started carrying, I expected to see them at banks, but never have.

It would indeed depend on the laws in your individual state.

Pretty blanket areas are government buildings: courthouses, schools, et cetera.

In some states, signage means nothing. In others, it can be a criminal offense to violate posted (non-government) areas.

In Ohio, posted signs carry the force of law. Meaning that if you knowingly carry in a posted building, you can be charged with trespass, criminal IIRC.

Lots of folks tend to hang their hat on the "knowingly" potion and take great interest in looking at their belly buttons while walking through entrance doors. I don't, I like being armed and would like to keep it that way, ie not having my license suspended - so I assume signage to mean that my business is not welcome. I do not go out of my way to look for them, however. If I don't see it, I don't see it. If I do, I disarm, have a brief conversation with the manager, and I leave.

I make exceptions from time to time, such as going to the grocery store that is right down the street (posted) for 1 or 2 items versus going across town to the un-posted one.

In Indiana about 3 or 4 years ago a company required all people to open there cars for inspection, I don’t remember the reason. This was in the middle of the deer hunting season and many people had rifles in their cars/trucks.
Anyone found with a gun was fired on the spot since the company had a no gun policy on there premises. At the time it was thought that a company head was a bamby lover.
Indiana later passed a law permitting any legal owner to be protected against this kind of anti gun crap by the companies they work for.
As for caring, only government buildings, police stations, airports. That’s the only ones I know about. I have never seen a public building other than the above with a sign stating no guns.
You should check your state laws.

Notice all of these posts boil down to - CHECK YOUR STATE LAWS. They should cover all of those in your carry class but it never hurts to look for yourself.

As a FedEx employee I am not allowed to have a weapon on the premises which bothers me a lot because the station lies dead center in the "hood" and stands not even a mile from the second most dangerous neighborhood in Charlotte. Fortunately for me there is a Home Depot parking lot that nudges up to our lot so I chose to park there along with several other co-workers on the whim that I might deal with an issue heading back to my side of town one night after work.
As I have learned each state has their own list of places you should "better" conceal your gun. Contacting the local sheriffs office should help you to acquire that list. I travel a lot so I have gotten into the habit of googling local sheriffs station to find out their rules for traveling with a firearm because that does change as well and they have always been more than happy to answer my questions.

Some states like mine, the "gun buster signs" carry no weight, unless you are told to leave. I hate banks that put those signs, when I have to go in a bank its for the reason of withdrawing loads of money, and people don't know the law could get hurt/jumped when carrying loads of money because of dumb banks. Why would you not allow your customers to protect themselves???? Is the bank going to replace my $100-$500 withdraws if I got jumped or them customers?

In Kentucky those signs have no weight of law behind them either. There are of course places that you can't carry, like a court house for example.

Laws very by state so I'd suggest using www.handgunlaw.us as a great resource.

I'd suggest you read the state law where you live and abide by it. The same goes for businesses that request that you not carry on their premises. It's taken us decades to get where most states allow carry concealed. To keep that political atmosphere, we all need to abide by the law. Concealing your weapon, as required by law, and then then entering an area that does not allow carry or you are requested not to carry is irresponsible. Rod

I don't know about other states but in Kentucky if a business posts no firearms allowed that means it is prohibited to carry there but not illegal. If you carry in this business and the owner / manager detects your firearm you can be asked to leave the property. As long as you leave when asked you have committed no crime.

Thanks for the detailed overview. Coworkers who are FFDOs almost always carry on their days off. Will have a chat with one of them.
