Is a firearm an appropriate wedding gift?

I'm getting married Friday, and was going to give her first rifle as a gift.

Is she a gunner? Are you giving her this in front of others, who may or may not be gunners?

If she's not a gunner... congrats again, you've scored a new rifle, and perhaps put yourself in the doghouse.

If she is but onlookers are a mixed bag, you might want to keep the gift a private affair.

She owns one pistol (SIG 228) and we go to the range every once in a while.
FWIW, I bought my mom a Walther PK 380 for Christmas a few years back.

Depends on the woman. My wife as she is now (after years of being around guns and coming to enjoy shooting) would love it, however if I were to have given her one as a wedding present back when we were married she would have been horrified by it. (she was from a very scared of guns family)

I wouldn't do it just because of the symbolism of some people. Example: I know that giving someone a cutlery set or a knife for any occasion is suppose to "cut the ties" to that person. I would recommend settling for something a little more traditional.

Guns are always good presents to people who likes guns. I wouldn't get her one if she doesn't like them. If she likes them enough that it would be a thrill for her to get then a resounding yes. Otherwise a more homey type gift would be better for now in keeping with the wedding theme. It doesn't have to be a holiday to buy her a gun later.

I'd generally say "No". Save the gun for a birthday present after you are married and you continue to share the hobby.

Being rather practical, I have given extremely practical wedding presents (read, boring) in past years and for the most part regret doing so now if I think about it.

Aren't you giving her a ring? Wedding gifts typically come from the guests.

That said, you can give her anything you want. Just make sure you want it in case she doesn't.

I voted depends on the woman. I don't think you could go wrong with more traditional gifts based on her preferences, whereas with a firearm, even if she likes them she might be disappointed do to the nature of the occasion. I would guess that within the subset of women who like firearms enough to want one as a gift, it's an even smaller subset that would want one as a gift for their wedding.

My wife is a shooter and comes from a long line of shooters. Raised around guns and all that....

...And if I'd have done something like that she'd have shot me.

That said, I can only think of one pair of our married friends where this might have worked - most of their vacations in their pre-kids days were rifle or bow-hunting trips, and both their families are full of hunters. Both are Texans.

My parents bought themselves a revolver for their second anniversary, but that is a bit different.

I've been to many weddings in my 3/4 century on the face of this good earth and been married for 52 years to the same woman and I have never seen a gun given as a wedding present. Give her a very nice watch and/or a piece of jewelry. The wedding day is the one day in a woman's life that she most wants to be seen and treated as the most beautiful, desirable woman on earth. My wife is a shooter but she just said if I had given her a rifle as wedding gift we would have set the record for the shortest marriage. I gave my wife a pair of diamond ear rings that took me two years to pay off. Congratulations...........
