Marlin 1893 date of manufacture

I was dining with some friends tonight and above the fireplace hung an octaganal barreled Marlin model 1893 in 30-30 caliber. Being a student of Winchester guns, I seldom deal with Marlins. Checking the Marlin site shows no imformation. The serial number is 166XXX. Can anyone out there help nail down a manufacturing date of my friends rifle?

Since Marlin letters are available for guns up to 1906, your friend can send for one to get a definitive answer.

IMO, his gun dates from about 1900-1901.
