looking for a reliable well priced semi

i'm new to this and want advice on a good reliable semi. something fairly priced and easily maintained. i've shot a glock .40 and beretta 9 but i got a daughter and want safety features on the gun unlike the glock. any suggestions will help alot. i got a gun safe and trigger lock its not like im gonna just leave it out but u never know. my friend suggested a springfield.

The Springfield XD line has a grip safety added to them. One of the .45 has an additional thumb safety (Model-XD9661HCSP 4 INCH SERVICE W/THUMB SAFETY).

I like the new FNP pistols. About the same price as Glock. Like how the safety is designed better than any other DA/SA pistol. I like Glocks a lot as well, but only when they are kept in a holster or with no round chambered.

I understand what you mean by having a peace of mind from manual safety. IMHO one of the safest way to store a glock is not to chamber a round. Safeties are meant to be disabled quickly when in need and when you have kids around they can still be easily disabled. Chambering the round by racking the slide is the hardest way

Get a Beretta 92FS, Beretta PX4, or Stoeger Cougar. All have the safety/decocker that when engaged decockes the gun and disables the trigger. You can then just insert a loaded magazine. A child or you would then have to rack the slide, switch off the safety and then have a long dual action trigger pull. About as safe as you can get short of having a padlock on the gun.

I offer the Taurus 24/7 series. They come in 9mm, .40 and .45 cal. The .9mm and .40 come in compact size also. You can have blue or SS or even titanium (in the 9mm). The new G2 model is ambidextrous.

The external safety/decocker is safe, useful and comforting.

The compacts carry well.

They are easy to shoot, accurate and easy to clean.

If you want external safeties, then look for 1911 type safety (frame mounted). Look at HK USP/USPc and FNX/FNP. There are others but these are the two I would look at first.
If long DA will be adequate, look at Sig DA/SA, Sig DAK, Walther P99 DA/SA, maybe CZ75 compact with decocker.

For SD or CC, I like the DAO(or similar) or SA/DA without any external safety (for ease of use) more than SAO+safety like 1911. The DA first shot makes me feel more secure from accidental discharge compared to Cocked&locked pistols or those with Glock type triggers.

1911s are great. I (just me) consider them primarily target pistols but can easily be used for SD. Look at STI Spartan.

As labhound said the Cougar, 92FS and PX4 are good choices. The XD's and XDM Springfields are very safe with their grip safetys and the M & P Smith and Wessons offer thumb safetys. Ruger SR9 and SR9c's also have thumb safetys. I think FN also offer safetys on their models as well.

The Smith 910/915 is a good hi cap lower priced, easy to maintain with an external safety often found in the used market for a steal. Uses all the Smith 59*series mags. Good frame for smaller hands too.

If you shot a "beretta 9"..how did you like it? I assume we're talking about the 92.

It's got a heavy double action pull even if you do get past the slide mounted safety..

It's also dead nuts reliable and can be had barely used for close to $400. ~$500 should get you a new one.

Based on your needs of extra safety for the situation at hand I would recommend a nice used HK P7.

A Ruger P95 would be the most cost effective but lacks the safety features other then an external safety and being a double action firearm but being a very good/reliable gun. The SR9 sounds like a better choice for your needs. It has an external safety which I like for a home defense protection. It also has a chamber indicator and a mag safety. The SR9 is a nice firearm with a good grip and trigger and comes with a life time warranty. It's also made in the U.S. which provides jobs for us Americans. What a thought.

For a NIB defense caliber home defense gun on a budget it is hard to beat a Sig SP2022. They run about $350. NIB. No manual safety but a stiff enough DA/SA trigger so it should not be a safety issue.

If you are open to used guns then I would look at the CZ75B, Beretta 92FS & 3rd Gen S&Ws. The CZ is a $400 gun and the S&W are $300 to $400 depending on configuration. I also 2nd the 92FS which is a $400 used gun.

You have a gun safe, you have a trigger lock. If you intend to use these to prevent someone else gaining access, then what possible features inherant in the gun itself could possibly make it more safe for your daughter or her friends?

I want to be clear, a gun, with ammo, loaded, only has one safety .... The brain of the person holding it

hey bud. the other guys are right that we need a little more information to sufficiently answer your question, but i have a feeling you just want to be pointed in the right direction.

if you are looking for a well priced, great value 9mm that will be great for everything short of ccw, look at the cz 75b. if you want to be able to carry it, look at the cz 75d compact (aka pcr).
