6 Rounds?

I want to get into revolvers as my main sidearm. I love their simplicity, ease of use, reliability, looks, feel, accuracy, and power.

The only thing that concerns me is 6 shots.

Please, revolver crowd, HELP!

This is sort of redundant, given your active thread about 8 round revolvers.

If that seems like too many, you can download it to whatever number you like. I prefer to carry them fully loaded though. Doesn't hurt them a bit.

Nobody said you can't reload them.

I don't really know what you're expecting us to tell you here. You want someone to tell you six shots is ok? It's enough until it isn't.

And reload fast too... Speed strips are kinda slow but speed loaders are just as fast as a mag change, IMO.

What happened to the 627? If you were concerned about 8 shots, why even bother asking about the 6? Sounds like you are trying to start an argument and not get answers to a question.

Custer...well he carried 2 Webleys (3" inch barrels) at the LBH. There were shell casings found under his body, but the Webleys were gone.

Is 6 enough? I guess for Custer it was 12.

If six or eight is questionable, then a FA is not in your future.

I carry four in the mdl 83.

I've been in 6 shootings and never fired more than 4 rounds in any of'm. 'Die Hard' was just a movie.

Get a Glock and carry a couple of spare 33 round mags on you just to be safe.

I started not to post in this thread too, but PiperSuperCubPilot sounds like a person who needs reassurance.

Lots of people, have been in very dangerous environments like war, high crime areas as police, or someone likely to be robbed and attacked and got along fine with 5-6 shot revolvers and 7-8 shot semi-autos. The vast majority of those people never even fired their handguns. The ones that did, rarely needed to reload, especially under fire.

Conversely, people who never thought they'd need their handgun, fired every round of their 15-18 shot semi-auto handguns and some or all of their spare magazines before the shooting was over. They are even a smaller minority.

My own personal view is that 5-7 initial medium caliber handgun rounds and one, or two reloads is an acceptable amount for a civilian CCW holder to defend themselves, against common criminal threats. However don't take that to mean that I'm opposing more, or less firepower. All of its flexible and open to personal preference. If someone feels more confident and comfortable, then by all means carry a larger caliber, higher capacity handgun.

The old adage I heard often when packing a revolver as my duty weapon 35 years ago was... "Six for sure".

This back when Browning High Powers, M1911s, S&W models 39 and 59 were the predominant semi-autos in the field of American LE and not so reliable with modern ammo.

If obligated to turn in my issued SIG 229 and required to pack a S&W model 10...no problem. I shoot it well and I feel confident with my abilities to defend myself or others with it.

As for those 7 or 8 shot revolvers...they scare me. Spent too many years with my 6 shot Model 19 Combat Magnum to ever feel comfortable with more rounds in a wheel gun. I would likely shoot six and reload.

If you ever saw 'Romancing The Stone' where Danny Deveto is running and shooting back over his shoulder then you pretty much have an idea of how most civilian type gunfights ought to be fought. Unless you're barricaded in your house shooting at an intruder, all you need to do is survive. You ain't Doc Holiday and it won't be the OK Corral.

PSCP,

While I pack a Glock most of the time (.40 S&W and 8-9 shots) I also pack a J .38 at times due to dress codes (5 shots and very slow reload.)

If you wish to pack a revolver, that is fine. Practice till you are very good with it.

Spend less time on things like speed loading and more in good hits (in fact no matter what you carry it's good hits that count.)

A good revolver, like one of these:

Will do quite fine. Perfect in my opinion (but then these four above are all mine!)

Like I said, practice till no matter how fast or slow, far or near, you get good hits with your chosen weapon.
