Are UMC 223 primers crimped? C

New to reloading here. I've been sorting through my .223 brass accumulated over the last year or so. I'm having a hard time seeing that any of the primer pockets are crimped.

I've looked at the pics posted by folks here and elsewhere. It looks to me, based upon some of the pics that none of it is crimped (again, primer crimp, not crimped bullets).

The Winchester brass I've got is definitely not - I bought that new.

Many of the others have a very tiny, subtle chamfer (read:shiny ring) around the primer pocket. Does that mean it's crimped? Should I just go for it with the hand primer and if I lose hearing and send the cats running for their lives, assume it's crimped?

It's basically a mix of UMC and reloads that I got from a production reloader.

Many Thanks,

LAXPatrick

If that shiny ring looks like a chamfer that is where the crimp has been removed. It's unlikely you will cause a primer to go off if you attempt to seat a primer in a crimped pocket. You will just find it difficult to impossible to seat the primer.

Go for it.
