A conversation about calibers might be part of the German effort, but I haven't seen any sign of it. Nevertheless, now is the time for the US to force yet another new caliber down the throat of its NATO allies
+1 for .458 SOCOM.

Just the generals with positions lined up with ammunition manufacturers.

Some do, or at least did.

This is from Wikipedia:

"The 6.8 mm Remington Special Purpose Cartridge (aka 6.8 SPC, 6.8 SPC II & 6.8×43mm) is a rifle cartridge that was developed by Remington Arms in collaboration with members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, United States Special Operations Command to possibly replace the 5.56 NATO cartridge . . . . "

Interestingly enough, a friend of mine from the army recently posted a picture on social media of himself holding a G36 variant... either a K or E model, with the long barrel/handgun and native dual optic. He is stationed in the Army and got some trigger time with it while over there. I asked him about it and he hadn't heard the controversy about the rifle. Him and a buddy stationed with him both state that the rifle has a good reputation for accuracy, and actually said "it's a very light rifle... that doesn't need to be re-zeroed"

Could be just anecdote from two people who shot it once and liked it, but I did find it interesting.
