Removal of SKS Bayonet

I recently picked up a couple of very nice Yugoslavian SKS's. I want to use a Dragonov stock on one of them and need to remove the bayonet. The screw that secures the bayonet is staked with two indentations. I can't just use a screw driver to remove. The screw is almost flush with the surrounding surface, so it seems that my only choice is to use a small drill to drill the two stake indentations and then to try the screw driver again. Is this the correct approach? I would like to do as little damage as possible.

do you have a dremel tool?mine has been very handy doing all sorts of things.i paid 25 bucks for mine at walmart, you can get hundreds of bits that attach for whatever size youre looking to do.ive used the polishing pads for barrel feed ramps, ive used the cutting bits for fitting stocks.you might look into getting one.

Hi George:

I just did that very thing. I picked-up a Black & Decker "dremel" tool. I had to drill the screw, cleanup with the dremel and touch up the blue with Oxpho-Blue.

Thanks for the response.
