I also would suggest a small revolver. I've yet to find a more perfect pocket gun than this.

Different manual of arms than duty guns. For a LE BUG, it should be the same manual of arms. A Kahr or any other DAO gun fits that.

Get A Sig P232

Get a Sig P232. It is similar to the Walther PP except:

a. It has better sights.
b. It is very lightweight (blued version/alloy frame/steel slide)
c. .380 acp is fine for backup.
d. It is ultra slim and flat.
e. Extremely accurate and reliable.
f. Can double as off-duty weapon where concealment is a factor.

I carried a Ruger Speed-Six with 2 3/4" barrel for years as a backup to my service revolver. The Sig P232 is like carrying nothing at all and is so much better quality than any Kel-Tec or similar variation in my opinion. Get the Sig and you won't be disappointed.

Look at the S&W M&P 340 . It is a J frame revolver 357 cal. , 13.3 oz. , front night sight. My second choice would be a Sig 232.

One vote for the LCP. Prove any new acquisition before carrying it.

Another vote here for the Seecamps. Especially the .380 if you can find one. The LCP looks promising but is too new to tell.

If you get the Seecamp, send me the grip and I will engrave a donut on it for you instead of the Punisher logo like I did on mine.
Playboy:

I figure that you could start a very lucrative side business engraving the grips of handguns. In fact, one design in particular would be in high demand, I believe.

If you simply engraved the Hello Kitty Logo on a person's handgun, then if that person was ever involved in a self-defense shooting that was questioned, the grand jury would naturally assume that the shooter was both a sweet and innocent person!

Makarov

If you can get a NEW Makarov that would suit the criteria you have set forth. 9x18 is more powerfull than a 32, and Maks can be easily concealed as they are small. Reliablle and durable, so long as you are the first owner.

What are your department's rules for off-duty carry? I know that some department's require that their officers respond to an emergency as if they were on duty. And some require that any handgun carried off-duty be from the same approved firearm list that the department itself uses.

Much more is expected of an armed police officer than an armed civilian. You would definitely have a higher bar to meet. I would thus be most hesitant to carry something like a .32 or .380.

I can see it now:

We first have the Twinkie Defense in San Francisco.

That is now followed by the "Hello Kitty defense", and gets the shooter off, scott free, regardless of circumstance....

Sounds like you want a pocket pistol. I would say Kel-Tec PF9 or Kahr PM-9.

back-up

If you have to go to your back up firearm you are already in deep do-do so any caliber at that point would do. I carry a .22 semi auto for back up but my normal carry firearm is a 1911 .45 cal. officers model. That is just my choice. the .22 is small, light, thin, but will still do the job as long as I do mine. Just my nickles worth (inflation)

If you didn't like the PPK in .380, you're really not going to like the P3AT.
My experience differs--the P3 does not bite at all in the web of the hand, but the trigger guard may rub the front of your trigger finger under recoil.

The differences are the P3 has a Browing-style action vs the straight blow-back PPK action, and the P3's polymer frame flexes in your hand vs the PPK's unyielding steel.

I've had excellent reliability with the P3 as long as I keep the death grip and don't top off the magazine.

+1 on the M&P 340--looking to get one myself....

The Colt Cobra is far from a pocket gun. The S&W Model 37 fits the description...

To the OP - overlooking revolvers is a mistake...even if they aren't "kewl."

P3AT!

I can't speak for anyone else's but mine works great. It's like having an empty wallet in my pocket. A .380 is nothing to sneeze at.

Well, my youngest progeny is about to turn 24, so I guess I'm not too "wet behind the ears." I own a pristine Colt Cobra that has the shroud over the ejector rod. I'm pretty sure that the OP wants something thinner and lighter than even the alloy Cobra. I'm not in l.e. and don't need a b.u.g., so this subject is pretty much moot for me, but I'd suggest that the OP says that he doesn't care about the price, so a Seacamp would probably fit his parameters nicely.

Whatever he gets, he's not likely to spend hours at the range "playing around" with it. He wants something light, thin, functional, and dependable to cover his glutenous maximus!

we dont have a set list for BUG/Off-duty gun. The only parameter in our policy is that we qualify with it and prove we can be as efficient as our duty gun. Although after listening to you all, reading more about it and speaking with my Sgt im not gonna go with anything smaller than .380 (my chief carries .380 off-duty) so the .32 is out. so after all this debate and the different opinions which is what i wanted in the first place im gonna go do two things... 1. see if i can get on a list for the new ruger lcp (at worst i could always resell it if its not comfortable to shoot) and 2. i never thought id say this but im gonna go look at some j frames and see how well they can be carried in a pocket and maybe take one out on the range. the only time ive ever fired a revolver was in the academy and that was because they made us so we would be familiar with one if we came upon it in the streets. after this discussion and further research maybe a revolver is what i want?!?!

You just want to throw it in your pocket correct, and something to use as last ditch when your primary carry is out of service for some reason?
Have you give any thought to the NAA blackwidow .22 Mag?

When I used to wear the shield, J frame smiths is what I used, and they are still popular with my cop buddies.

My choices as follows:

Revolver:
M&P 340
642

With Crimson Trace Grips.

SA:
Kahr PM 9.
Seecamp 380.

PM 9 Vs 642 size comparison. Weights are comparable.

I'll throw this in just to muddy the water.
The Walther PPk is a biter. Has nothing to do with the power to weight ratio.
Too heavy and large IMO.
Identically is the BERSA 380. Same weigth same round...no bite.
Might look at the BERSA CC .380.
Again, large and heavy.

In the final analysis, deep concealment, weight, size, life on the line, I would have to break the bank, Seecamp .380 stoked with SGD or Golden Saber 102s.

Kahr PM9... 6+1 Rounds 9MM, EXTREMELY well made, reliable, and accurate... and good looking to boot. They are pocketable and run about $450-$500 used.

You will get lots of excellent opinions here!

I think the first decision you need to make is whether you want an auto or a revolver. Once you decide, then you can narrow down your options.

My vote goes for a lightwieght revolver such as the S&W 442/642 or, perhaps a Taurus 85 ultralight (comes in many flavors). If weight is not an issue, there are many more to choose from, ie. the Ruger SP101 (this excellent little tank also comes in different cals).

Thanks for what you do for a living, and be safe!

I am in my 20s and love carrying a hammerless J frame style revolver in .38 +p. I have to say a j-frame in .38+p or .357 are great for pocket carry. I wear jeans that have a large front pockets (jeep brand) and it fits great in pocket holster with very little printing.

Get to know revolvers they are fun to shoot and have a great niche in concealed carry.
