Bullets and Powder for .300 win mag?
Hopefully y'all can give me some opinions on this. I am starting into reloading for the .300 winchester magnum and would like some opinions on what powders and bullets work best. For the moment i'm just going to do some target loads,my range is limited to 700 yards if that helps. Eventually i will be looking to use this out west hunting elk so anything for that is appreciated also. Thanks alot for any input.

190 gr SMK or Nosler Custom Competition.
IMR 4350, IMR 7828, or IMR 4381. H1000 would be the slowest powder I would consider for that range. Although at 700 and under, you could get away with cheap 168gr HPBT bullets and be just fine, no issues with the transonic range, but you will want 190's if you get out beyond 1k. Jimro

200 gr accubonds and rl22 near max. My 700 remington likes very much. Elk on the other hand do not.

Thanks for the help guys. What would you suggest for powders past 1k?,like i mentioned for starters it will be 700 but i know it will be over 1k out west. I have basically unlimited range out west so over 1k will happen. Thanks again for the help,it's appreciated.

Well, if you are shooting for competition at known distances with wind flags I'd go with Bart B.'s advice and stick with IMR 4350, it won't give you max velocity but it will be consistent.
If you aren't going for competition level accuracy at known distances, then IMR 7828 SSC is the way to go, or H1000 (the powder that NSWC Crane chose for the latest 300 Win Mag load for SOCOM). Jimro

My Winchester really likes the 7828scc at beginning loads with either the 165 or 180 Soft point boat tail from Hornady. I found it interesting that it shot just as well within a 2 grain span. I don't remember right off but it was at starting loads.

My A-Bolt too loves IMR4350 with a Barnes 168 gr. Tsx lit by a Federal GM215M ( magnum ) primer. Longest shot on paper test was 300 yds ( under 2 inch group ) and longest kill was an Elk at near 350 using Kentucky windage. Hit him right where I wanted , watched him teeter then lie down and drop his head in as much time as it took me to type this. 2 elk and 4 deer and all were anchored with this load. I call it "Thors Hammer".

I've used IMR4350 with Hornady 180 gr. SST's with a little bit of success out of a Remington 700. Managed to get 3/4 inch groups at 100 with it, haven't had a chance to stretch them out as far as you plan to, though. My brother used the 700 to take a whitetail with this load last weekend, he said it was pretty effective!
My $0.02 Cheers! McClintock |
