Slugging my Mosin

I just slugged my Finnish Mosin M39 as I am finally getting ready to reload for this caliber. It measured out at .3105/.311 I have a small supply of .312 Hornady Ballistic tip jacketed bullets to reload and being fairly new to reloading this caliber, was wondering if they will be ok. I am starting out with a minimum load to be on the safe side. Any comments or suggestions appreciated

It should be fine. But I would save those 0.312" for some other rifles. They are kinda hard to find now. 0.311" is more plentiful.

Thanks for the input..... seems everything is hard to find these days... the .312 bullets are 150 grain and without buying a thousand at a time I'm having trouble finding .310 or .311 bullets also....

0.311" is not bad. Speer makes a lot of them at good price. Graf and sons has those. Only a few manufacturers do 0.312", hornady being one with reasonable price. But they stopped and retooled for 30 cal.

.311 is the best choice

tangolima is correct, use the .311, same as is used in the 303 British. Some of the Mosins were actually bored for the 311. I have a couple, same deal, though one is only a bit tighter than the .311. I never paid too much attention to the origin, but think they were both made in the S/U. They weren't made for accuracy, by todays standards anyway. Mine can hit the target out to a couple of hundred yards, don't ask about any group.

Graf's shows Hornady 150gn .312 in 100-bullet boxes besides a few other choices. They also have Sierra 174gn HPBT MatchKings (though only in 500-bullet boxes right now, so a bit pricey). I got a couple hundred of those not long ago to make some heavy match rounds for my M39. Haven't been to the range with that load yet. The Lapua D46, designed (I'm pretty sure) just for that rifle and its kin, is 185 gn, so heavy isn't necessarily bad.

Grafs indeed has 0.312" 150gr in stock. Thanks. I will get some for my over bored smle and mosin. I quite like Speer for their 0.311". Sierra is good but pricy.

I"m jealous.

my 1934 hex receiver's barrel is so bad I doubt I could get a slug to push through. if it did it would probably be 10 grains lighter when it came out.

with Brown Bear ammo at 100 yds I can get a 4" group for the first 4 rounds. after that it's a 14" group. I'm guessing 4 rounds is enough to warm up the barrel so the bullets have more room to waller their way through and out.

but it sure looks nice on the outside.

Well if there are riflings there is always hope. Over sized 30 cal cast bullets can be as big as 0.316". 8mm cast bullets are 0.323" to 0.325". Slug it and you may find something that fits.

my finn also slugged to exactly .3105 like yours, I have been using the hornaday 303/7.7 with pretty good results. the bullet is a tad sort than I would like, you have to seat above the cannelure to et to decent OAL, but has proved to be decently accurate. I haven't tried .311 yet, but I will be next.

as you can see from the reviews, a lot of people are using these in nagants with success, give them a try

the middle target is monarch, the little dots are all different charges of 4064 under the hornaday at 100 yards

What starting charge did you use for the 4064 powder as I have both 4064 and Hodgdon 335 powder on hand.... I was going to start with 43 grains of the 4064 with the ballistic tip 150 grain bullets....

My bullets were 174gr so I can't say what your start loads will be. Hodgdons will definitely have it on their website though
