Caliber for both Revolver AND Semi-Auto...?

Is there a caliber that would work in both a revolver and semi-automatic pistol (besides .22)? In other words, if I wanted to own both a semi and a revolver, but only buy one type of bullet...is that possible?

.45acp is a good one. You will need to buy moonclips for use in the revolver but the ammo is the same.

45 is probably the easiest to accomplish this...S&W also made a pistol (model 52)that shot 38 Spl wadcutters a while back....I believe you can also find 9mm in both

S&W also made a nice revolver in 10mm.

There ya go. It will also shoot .40S&W's, which are a lot more plentiful on the autoloader side.

I don't know why nobody makes a revolver in .38 Super. It has a small rim. (maybe the rim is too small for reliable extraction cuz they could slip past the star?)

I just looked at the cartridge drawings. You should be able to shoot .38 Supers in a gun chambered for .357 Magnum. Just drop them in, and they will headspace off the rim -- but they might not fit if your .357 has tight chambers. (you could use a .357 sizing die when you load them and they could be used in either a .38 Super auto or a .357 Mag revolver, but the brass might not last long.) You could also ream the chambers of your .357 out another couple of thousandths, but then your .357 and .38 Special brass might not last long.

Ruger made a 9mm SP101. Pretty hard to find however.

Thing is, why bother? Each cartridge has it's own character. I have a 45 semiauto and a 357 revolver, enjoy shooting both for the different experience each has to offer.

Revolvers in 9mm and .45ACP are pretty easy to find.
There were ones made in 10mm and/or .40S&W, but those are trickier.

Smith and Wesson model 610 revolver in 10mm is available, according to their website.

Glock still offers G20 and G29 in 10mm.

Happy Trails

My favorite caliber in terms of the one that is used in both semi and a wheelgun is 44 Magnum.

Pistol would be Desert Eagle 44 Mag (if not 50AE)
Revolver would be Ruger Super Redhawk.

You can also get .45 auto rim cartridges (or empty cases, if you reload) to fire in a .45 revolver without moonclips.

The S&W 52 is a specialized target gun that will only feed and cycle correctly using lightly loaded 148gr LWCs seated flush with the case mouth. IIRC the magazine only holds 5 rounds to accomodate the case rims, and the pistol is equipped with a large, complex, and ungainly adjustable sight. It's really only suitable for bullseye target shooting, and it's an expensive collector's item.

S&W has also made 2 production revolvers in 9mm Luger- the J-frame 940 and K-frame 547. The 940 uses the popular concealed-hammer "Centennial" frame and needs moon clips for proper extraction. The 547 was built for a canceled Israeli military contract, and has a complex and unusual extractor design that allows cartridges to be extracted without needing moon clips; otherwise, it's largely identical to a heavy-barrel M10. Both are expensive collector's items.

As others have already mentioned, if you want a Smith, IMHO you're better off in .45ACP (25/625/1917) or 10mm Auto/.40S&W (610). The gun will be easier to find and can still be purchased new.

The Automag III also came in 9mm Win Mag and it wouldn't be that difficult to rechamber any .38 Special +P rated revolver, or any existing 9mm revolver for that matter, to accomodate it.

the .50AE revolver is also made by Magnum Research (the BFR) - as far as I know no one else supports that cartridge.

Also not aware of any .41 mag autoloaders.

However, it occurs to me that AMT makes a .30 Carbine autoloader and Taurus makes a .30 Carbine revolver

AMT also makes a .22 WMR Autoloader.

But I doubt any of this exotic stuff is what the original poster was looking for.

P.S. note any 10mm revolver can shoot .40S&W

.30 Carbine works:

Ruger Blackhawk and a USGI M1 Carbine

That's the combo I have. I love the automag 3, even though it has a huge muzzle flash in low light conditions...still a blast to shoot.

*smacks forehead* Yes, I forgot Freedom Arms, who as far as I can tell make a single-action revolver in just about every caliber on the planet (why not when they're basically custom?)

Didn't know about the .41 mag Desert Eagles, learn something new every day!
