best suppressor for a 458 Caliber?
I am looking for a suppressor for a 458 Socom that may all so end up on a 45/70 lever gun if I get feeling crazy.
I am looking for some thing that is extremely quiet. I don't really care how heavy or big it is (so long a a high mounted scope can see over it) I all so don't really care how much it costs so long as it will last. I needs to be built tough enough to handle 458 caliber bullets both sub sonic and faster ammo (300 grain bullet at about 2300 FPS and 500 grain bullet at 1600 FPS) any recommendations?

That sounds like a custom job. I'd check with Liberty first as they do some really neat custom silencers, and go from there.

AWC makes the Turbodyne for the .50 BMG. That would probably work on a .458 pretty well. It is a HUGE can.

I know I may be asking too much. I like to shoot but I don't like to spook the deer I was hoping I could find a happy medium. I hunt from my back porch if I start making lots of loud noise I may not be able to do that any more. currently when I shoot a deer (about 1-2 times a year) i have to wait 2-3 month before I see deer again.

I have found the AWC thundertrap and then SBR makes one as well... Which one do you think would work better?

I think hearing safe for super sonic ammo would be very acceptable.

Well my brother decided to not wait for me to get the tax return and sold his 458 Socom to one of his friends.
I am now thinking about Suppressing one of my 45/70 marlins (probably the SBL). Do you think have it hearing safe with hot ammo is a realistic goal? I would love to take it elk hunting and not need to wear hearing protection.

I built one for my 458 socom that telescopes back over the barrel to gain all of the volume I could without making it larger in diameter than the handguard and keeping length as short as I could.
It makes less noise than an AAC M4 1000, M4 2000 or a 762 SD side by side. |

That idea won't work on a lever gun as the mag tube will be in the way. I don't know the laws where you are but here you can only use a suppressor on non-game animals.

I am not a huge fan of tactical gun, the only reason I was thinking a 458 Socom originally was my brother offered to sell it to me for cheep for me to suppress. But he sold it to a friend so now I am thinking a suppressed 45/70 (I have 3 rifles and 2 hand guns in 45/70, BFR and Contender) would throw the same 400-550grain bullets down range and could be down loaded to sub sonic levels.

Here is my 458 socom AR-15. It is not hearing safe when fired under weather protection and is borderline at best out in the open.
The final product is without the brake shown in the drawing, but I wish I made it with a full 10" out in front of the muzzle for better suppression. Ranb |

I found this: http://www.topnotchtactical.com/cont...turbodyne.html
I know its for a 50BMG so it should be more than adequate for a 458 caliber right? They claim they make the 50BMG hearing safe I see they make one in a 416 caliber and they said they do custom work. so would I benefit from asking them to make a 458 caliber version of this suppressor or would staying with a 50Cal version be as good? p.s. sorry I am asking so many questions. I am a newbie when it comes to suppressors.

Jmorris is using K baffles, and rnab is using 60 degree step cones. I wonder if the K baffle is better for this round. I understand the pressures are a bit lower than for high power rifle rounds, so maybe it's better suited for K's?

The 458 socom uses "pistol" powders and even pistol primers. However there is a bit more difference in our cans than just the cones. The one I built is 14.75"x2" and .060" 4130 tube, that's a lot of volume difference at first glance; however, the one I built only extends 7" past the muzzle so the inner tube that goes over the barrel subtracts from that volume.
